I'm not a fan of the vehicles AT ALL in Halo, due to the awful control scheme. My biggest proble with Halo, however, is the repetitiveness. About 1/2 to 2/3 through the game, I almost put it down, it was so unbearable. Clear a room full of enemies, travel across a bridge... clear an IDENTICAL room, travel across an IDENTICAL bridge, clear an IDENTICAL room, travel an IDENTICAL bridge... and so and and so forth. It honestly felt like they had a decent 2-3 hour game and used copy/paste to expand it up to full length. I don't see how so many people can give this a pass. |
That's a fair complaint, to be fair, though, Halo was clearly rushed to meet the Xbox launch, as I always felt the basic story, concept, etc. was really good, but hindered by the use of repeat and rinse rooms in-between the more polished battles and set pieces. The funniest thing I always though was the fact the interior rooms repeated so much they added arrows on the floor to make sure you didn't get mixed up which way you were going.
I thought the vehicles handled okay, though.
I think comparing the metacritic scores for Halo on Xbox vs Halo on PC makes it clear it was how well Halo played as a console FPS vs as an FPS that got the praise, once it hit PC it's score dropped a fair bit, and the repetitive levels, etc. were criticised far more heaviliy.
I do think though Halo did add some nice elements to FPS, but apart from its huge following due to the way it took off with Xbox in US (and now 360) I would agree Half Life and Half Life 2 did much more respectively when they launched, particularly Half Life.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...
