Forums - Gaming - What if all gaming went digital? Will they all flop? since "PSP Go flopped"

@nen-suer

No, im saying that its one of its biggest features removed (Xbox 360 i mean)

Yep. I'll go with the connection speeds problem. According to the article below UK broadband is just about fit to meet today's needs and not ready for future applications.

The US did better but still didn't make the top tier.

For large console games this is still way in the future, and as these games become more complex and advance I can only see these games getting much larger.

@puffy , what part are exactly considering upgrading for the PSP Go? if its the HDD couldnt you just buy a bigger Micro SD?

Well i agree that no home console should ever be DD only due to extremely large HDD and bandwidth ...I have Rogers Cable from Canada with a 60gb bandwidth. If i download a game ..say.. MGS4..thats like 50gb gone off my bandwidth and probably a huge chunk of my HDD. And the time waiting for it..gahh lol.

I think its safe to just let "DD only" gaming for handhelds only and should never reach home console. But with like old Xbox games and PS2 games going online it might set a trend that next gen will have 360 and PS3 games online to download. BWC should always be a must feature.

Not at all. If this had been the PSP 2, with dual analogs and upgraded graphics, with that price and all digital it would have sold really well, and very few people would have had a problem with it. However, perception of it is a current model that has been stripped of features other versions of this model do have.

Also, the first gaming system that was all digital was the iPod touch/iPhone, really.

Also #2, happy birthday v-rock-san! (I don't know you well enough to call you -kun)

There's too many knee jerkers in this place, if something doesn't sell 1 zillion on day one it's considered a flop...seriously folks...

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

The Flopped Zeebo was built around this idea. It worked as a cellfone receiver that allowed you to download games anywere. The problem is the cost and bandwidth. Anyway, memory space is becoming cheaper and cheaper. My main issue with DD is the fact that they can alienate entire countries if they choose, like PSN did with Brazil, for example. I (until amazon started to sell psn products too) just couldn't enjoy the psn store because it wouldn't take my credict card. Some people found a way around it, but is too much work IMO.
But if is something like steam, I'm all for it, cause allows me too buy and play games I otherwise wouldn't. Just yesterday, I bougth "Mount and Blade" through Steam, but the game is not avaible in stores in Brazil.

The lack of UMD isn't the problem, but that the UMD drive wasn't replaced with something more convenient.

Downloadable games do have their market in the future and in the form of free flash games played with the browser. But they won't replace boxed games, atleast in the foreseeable future.

Downloadable content seems to work when it's dirt cheap. Games in mobile phones or music you download cost next to nothing.

When compared to music and movies, one thing to stand in the way of digital downloads is that games are used in proprietary devices, unlike movies and music that work with all the devices in the market. Replacing your MP3 player doesn't result to replacing your music library or replacing the service you use to download your music from.

I was thinking of the iPod being the first but i felt the PSP was more just cause its #1 function was gaming and is still seen mainly as a game device.  Whereas the ipod touch/iphone games seemed more just like simple cellphone games but with better tech, but again most see them more as an mp3 media player/phone... or else then the first digital gaming system would be those old phones with like 'snake' and 'blackjack' ...oh old cellphone games..but thats just how i see it XD

and thanks!! ^___^

I'm not even sure if it is question of if haha. If they all went digital retailers wouldn't carry the hardware anymore. Meaning the hardware would have to be sold online as well. Remember with the iphone you still have many things that can be sold in stores which thus keep the retailers happy. If the main profiting point for retailers, software (also accessories), was digital what would be the point of selling the hardware. Only reason they sell the hardware is to ensure they can sell the software.

So yes I doubt they would do well at all unless they have some way to keep the retailers involved. I mean all companies have had the option to do something like this for quite some time. But the reason they haven't is for the exact issue I've stated. Even with PSP go it isn't the sole PSP being offered nor will PSP 3000 be discontinued. So maybe in the future something like this will happen but they are going to have to be able to satisfy retailers at the same time.
