I'm not even sure if it is question of if haha. If they all went digital retailers wouldn't carry the hardware anymore. Meaning the hardware would have to be sold online as well. Remember with the iphone you still have many things that can be sold in stores which thus keep the retailers happy. If the main profiting point for retailers, software (also accessories), was digital what would be the point of selling the hardware. Only reason they sell the hardware is to ensure they can sell the software.
So yes I doubt they would do well at all unless they have some way to keep the retailers involved. I mean all companies have had the option to do something like this for quite some time. But the reason they haven't is for the exact issue I've stated. Even with PSP go it isn't the sole PSP being offered nor will PSP 3000 be discontinued. So maybe in the future something like this will happen but they are going to have to be able to satisfy retailers at the same time.
