The lack of UMD isn't the problem, but that the UMD drive wasn't replaced with something more convenient.
Downloadable games do have their market in the future and in the form of free flash games played with the browser. But they won't replace boxed games, atleast in the foreseeable future.
Downloadable content seems to work when it's dirt cheap. Games in mobile phones or music you download cost next to nothing.
When compared to music and movies, one thing to stand in the way of digital downloads is that games are used in proprietary devices, unlike movies and music that work with all the devices in the market. Replacing your MP3 player doesn't result to replacing your music library or replacing the service you use to download your music from.
