Forums - Sales - Media Create September hardware sales

September was an interesting month for video game hardware sales in Japan. Due to the new model and price drop for the Playstation 3, the high-definition system rose significantly during the month. Meanwhile rumors and the eventual announcement of a price cut slowed Nintendo Wii sales while the looming launch of the PSP Go marked a decline for PSP sales.

According to data compiled from weekly Media Create reports, here are the hardware sales for the month of September (August 31st – September 27th) in Japan:

Playstation 3 – 298,142
Nintendo DSi – 256,332
PSP – 78,966
Nintendo Wii – 67,554
Nintendo DS Lite – 48,100
Xbox 360 – 24,214
Playstation 2 – 10,683

For comparison’s sake, here is the data from August (August 3rd to August 30th):

Nintendo DSi – 277,461
Nintendo Wii – 146,882
PSP – 127,043
Xbox 360 – 30,831
Nintendo DS Lite – 29,659
Playstation 2 – 15,982
Playstation 3 – 14,862

After a dreadful August in Japan, the Playstation 3 saw a 1906% increase in hardware sales during the month of September. The Nintendo DS Lite also saw a modest increase of 62%. Every other video game system is down month-to-month with the Nintendo DSi (-8%), Nintendo Wii (-54%), PSP (-38%), Xbox 360 (-21%) and Playstation 2 (-33%) seeing declines in hardware sales.

300k in one month is huge!

And snuggle the girls be they short or tall,
Then follow young Mat whenever he calls,
To dance with Jak o' the Shadows."

wow! It looks more like the PS3 is actually more in competition with the DSI for software sold last month, everything else was just "small" potatoes. I am shocked that the wii has declined so much, I did not think it was possible. After the cut we will see if it will effect it like the ps3 cut or like the 360 cut this year. (alot or a little).

wow!

reversal expected in october? Wii and PS3 to swap places?

Oh sorry, based on your post history id expect something like that from you, well we can't make assumptions now can we =)

Assuming FFXIII shifts HW when it hits, and GT5 gives a boost too, plus the steady sprinkling of jRPG's arriving in steady succession, I guess the 360's time of disruption in the market is coming to an end (Japan of course).

I think MS made a good play, delaying titles hitting PS3 and funding titles for the region, but unless Natal proves to be a monster hit with Japanese I think MS will struggle to gain much more ground than they have in the region.

PSP down, but I guess until we see how things settle post Go! it's hard to say what this shows other than sales slowing up prior to a new model launch.

Wii low but I'm assuming for the moment that's just a dip before price drop.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Dang PS3 almost topped the DS for September.
