The UK can get its energy from Southern Europe (btw the number 1 solar energy producer in the world is Germany, despite having a similar climate to the UK).

We can store solar energy on large sites via molten salt, as for home installations, we can split water using excess daytime energy and then recombine it of a night time (which releases energy) - which can all be done in a basement or attic, or something.

Fusion power is the only solution that is economically viable, cheap [after development], reliable and clean. That combined with hydrogen fuel cells for vehicles is going to solve most of our energy problems.

Until we get there, we need a combination of approaches in the places that suit them. Nuclear (fission) isn't a bad option as long as it's temporary therefore giving a finite quantity of waste and risk. Solar is useful in some countries, wind in others, geothermal in others etc. but there is no one right choice between them.

Molten Salt?  The only problem with molten salt is that you either have to

A) Keep spending energy to keep it in stoarage and active

B) Use a lot of energy to revitalize the "battery."

Meaning that either way that stored energy is going to cost a LOT more to use then other power sources as you'll be spending energy multiple times over to keep a small portion of the energy "alive"....

and even then it leads to huge problems if their math at how much energy will be used is off, as Molten Salt can't exactly be eaisly turned on and off.

Actually Nuclear power is safe.... a lot safer then people think.

The effects of Nuclear radiation have been greatly exaggerated.

You'd be surprised what the research on Chernobyl and Japan show.

Chernoybl for example was expected to kill hundreds of thousands.

Actual deatholl so far.... 54.

Total expected.... 4,000... and even that could be overestimated.

Nuclear power is the best source of energy in my opinion. Especially if we eventually manage to support a fusion infrastructure as opposed to fission. That didn't come out right did it? Well you know what I mean.

Interestingly enough you can now get a permit to visit Pripyat (the town near Chernobyl that was evacuated), I would love to go and see a city frozen in time like that, it would be really interesting.

Wind and Solar are cheaper and safer.

A) No they are not cheaper

B) Wind and Solar are great... when the wind is blowing, the sun is shining... and there is room.  Where praytell is England going to find the massive room needed for solar and wind farms in England?  What are they going to do when the wind isn't blowing and it's overcast?

C) Wind and Solar are nowhere near the level of efficency to work huge power grids by themselves, and even if they did they need backup systems... and they won't be able to work everywhere because you need very specific conditions to drop down windfarms or solar farms.  Using Solar is going to end up burning more fossil fuels then Nuclear will in the long run.

You know... for the rest of the quote you cherry picked.

it won’t be all of their business by far. We’ll still be using oil, we’ll still be using gas, we’ll still be using coal. But we’ll be using those at far diminished levels than we are today.”

By far?  So... what... 50% fossil fuels... at least?

Ok, are you willing to store spent nuclear fuel under your bed?  In your car boot? in your backyard?

Didn't think so.

When someone comes up with a reasonable way to dispose of nuclear waste AND makes building the plants cost effective, THEN I will accept it as a viable alternative.

We're already drilling and putting the waste under ground. No problems at all.

And of course nuclear energy is cost effective, or else it wouldn't be widespread all over the world since 50 years back, with new plants being built all over the place.

Everyone here who believes that nuclear power is a good idea needs to read a book called "Unreliable Sources: A Guide to Detecting Bias in News Media"

http://www.amazon.com/Unreliable-Sources-Guide-Detecting-Media/dp/0818405619

In one of the chapters they expose the fact that:

General Electric is the largest manufacturer of nuclear power plant components, they also own a major part of what is called "the mainstream media" (MSNBCNBC) which has been used (apparently with great effect) to promote their HIGEST PROFIT ITEM. (nuclear power plant components)

YOU'VE. BEEN. PLAYED.

I think the last episode of Question Time warrants a bumping of this thread.

I cracked up when that guy said "I have a question for Dick Griffin...oh sorry, Nick Griffin".

The BNP got completely destroyed.

indeed, theres actually a whole seperate thread for the show, once again, I seem to be the only true liberal on these boards, does no-one else believe in equlaity these days?

Not trying to be rude, but you're not as liberal as you think you are...

how so?

most criticism I get is for being "too liberal" lol, do you mean because im okay with punishing people for inciting hatred?

Well yeah for one.  Punishing people for inciting hatred is restricting freedom of speech.  A very unliberal thing to do.

I just feel that when you start doing that youre going to far, im only talking about people who actually say "this person should die because they are such and such", if people are saying that seriously with malice, then im okay with them getting a warning of some sort, that seems like one step from actually carrying out that harm.

@ bolded, I have other views you consider unliberal?
