Forums - Nintendo - The Wii doesn't need a price cut...

Ah well, as far as system sellers go, we have New SMB Wii, Wii Fit Plus, Super Mario Galaxy 2, a new Zelda, FFCC, Dragon Quest X, Mario & Sonic @ Winter Olympics, Metroid Other M, and undoubtedly a whole slew of other titles coming up, including the mysterious Vitality Sensor thingy.

And that's without considering 3rd party efforts that are sure to sell tons like the Rockbands, the Guitar Heroes, the Fifas, Sims, Harry Potters, WWFs, Red Steels, and endless party- and sports games compilations.

Wii will do fine.

those titles by themselves will not sell systems, only NSMB would have done that. in order for software to help wii needs momentum and NSMB wasnt going to give it enough momentum. wii price cut + NSMB + marketing campaign + possible NSMB bundle will give it a mega momentum boost, just like the 360 last year. once the momentum is regained then it will be easier for nintendo to sustain it with software/bundles ect

Well it's doubtful it needs a pricecut to continue a successful year in 2009. Going by trends in comparison to PS2, it is still on track to have 19 million units sold this year or 10 million by the end of December 2009. That's pretty damn good.

Nintendo understands they need to be competitive in the eyes of the consumer. If not it'll have a negative reaction. Of course I'm not sure if now is good timing but it shows that they are willing to be competitive when necessary to attract as many customers to the brand as possible.

$199 ! Thats gonna rock the holidays especially with New Super Mario Bro's coming out.

NINTENDO

nintendo forever . . .

Software will always be a stronger driver of hardware and momentum than price cuts. I agree with the OP. Price cut is not needed, and as quiet as it's kept, the Wii increased sales from July despite analysts predicting further drops.

Price isn't the cause of Wii's drop in momentum, it is software. I think Nintendo was expecting stronger third party support, which didn't happen, so Wii just has to make its presence even larger.

I don't get why just because HD twins are having a hard time with selling consoles at their original MSRP and needing to slash prices 50% since launch is reason to make Nintendo do the same.

I have nothing against a price cut, we are in the worst economical situation I've ever seen. But from a business perspective it seems a bit awry. After the holidays would make more sense to me.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

The Wii needs a lot more than a price cut for me personally. All I want is Monster Hunter and I'll be satisfied.

Everyone needs to play Lost Odyssey! Any opposition to this and I will have to just say, "If it's a fight you want, you got it!"

Well, a price cut is always nice for a system but numbers wise, even with all the news bashing Wii sales numbers in comparison to its former year's numbers, the Wii still sells quite a bit every week. I highly doubt that the $250 price point would affect the Wii's xmas sales numbers. Every single kid in Grade 5 and below seems to want a Wii. PS3 and Xbox aren't even on their radar. My friend just got her 6 and 10 year old cousins a Wii and they were ecstatic. Apparently, everyone other kid in town has a Wii except them.

If Wii was going to get a price cut, Spring 2010 is a good time. Might as well bank on the brisk holiday sale season while you can.

Handhelds are different because people play them differently (shorter bursts generally) and people may buy multiple units for a family.

Interestingly, the Wii's first price cut will dropi it to 80% of original price. The DS Lite's cut has it at 87% of its original price.

Basically, looking over that game line-up, there is a lot of chafe to be separated from the wheat. I will buy the wheat but try to avoid the chafe. A lot of the "system sellers" (Zelda, RS2, SMG2, etc.) don't come out til 2010. So to make sure they sell -- and sell more systems -- the Wii needs to sell well this holiday.

I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble.

Wii has just as many system sellers as xbox 360 or PS3, not a problem.

Wii has saturated it's price point.

I've read through the entire Wii schedule and I have to say Nintendo needs to do something urgently about so much shovelware flooding the shelves. These Holidays crap drown the potential sales of good games. Any good effort will have to fight against hordes of shovelware.

Sales could be dying because of the lack of good software. Every year it's the same, 10% of the games are worth buying while the 90% that's left it's just cash-ins from lazy devs.

For the informed consumer, there's not much coming out this Holiday season, while the uninformed consumer will buy anything, and good games will have a chance of 1 in 10 of getting picked up by them.
