Forums - Nintendo - Malstrom responds to Wii price cut.

I think people who are against the Wii's price cut are fanboys. Seriously, why would any consumer be against price cut? If price cuts are so detrimental then how come it didn't hurt the DS which is pushing over 100 million world wide? Price cuts surely didn't hurt the PS2 which is the best selling console ever.

Nintendo will lose profits you say?

I can say they will make more profits in the long run with extra millions sold because of the price cuts which leads to more software, controllers, accessories sold which leads to more profits for Nintendo. Moreover, by increasing the console marketshare makes the Wii even more appealing to third parties which leads to more software for the Wii which leads to more sales of the Wii. Third parties love price cuts on hardware because that leaves the consumer extra money to buy software.

Can you guys seriously knock off the Red Ocean/Blue Ocean bullsh-t. Just because you understand one meager theory doesn't give you insight into a multi-billion dollar corporation like Nintendo or what their financial goals are or what their arrangements with part suppliers are ... there are a million things you guys likely are not aware of.

Nintendo doesn't give a sh-t about Blue Ocean/Red Ocean when it doesn't serve their purposes. Simple as that.

Clearly things like market share, stock price, and brand momentuem also matter to them.

Chill out there, compadre. I'll rephrase for you.

Nintendo is not necessarily doing this in response to Microsoft or Sony - for all intents and purposes, they could still be off by themselves, apart from the HD fray. The price drop could very well just be a consequence of flagging sales, and may have happened with or without Microsoft and Sony's drops.

Better?

I'm also not ready to call this a Red Ocean move, actually, because it may not be in response to other price cuts, simply their own flagging sales.

Problem is, all the media will think otherwise. Not that Nintendo care about it but still >.<

Or maybe more simply Nintendo understands that they've worked too hard to gain their market standing with the Wii. And they aim to protect and grow that market, rather than to piss it away just to prove some economic theory that happens to give 10 nerds on the internet a woody in their pants.

Nintendo doesn't give two craps about anything that doesn't serve their bottom line. If they felt like they could make more money with a $500 machine for the core gamer with uber-violent games, they would totally do that.

No offense price point was never the issue with system sales, if i were them and they want to me more competive across the board then improve online and hardcore game selection and stop just catering to the casual and allowing third party companies to keep putting shovelware on their system sometimes when i look at the titles coming out it reminds me of the ps2 as that was my only critism of that system.

I don't think they give a shit about marketshare. This whole competition thing? They don't pay any attention. Microsoft and Sony might as well not even be there.

They are only concerned with their profit margins, short or long-term.

-_-; another one of his nerd rants

jeez guys why do you care about this dude ?

Should we be more like you, and claim to not care while still posting in every Malstrom thread made on this site?

Anyhow, I doubt the price cut is going to have quite the negative effect Malstrom's claiming it will. That said, I'm surprised they went through with it: I figured they'd wait until next year, if at all. I wonder: does this mean they don't have much faith in themselves to push hardware with pure software? That's kind of a shock to see them concede that.

If I recall correctly, the DS only had a minor price cut in the West: it never saw one in the market it's penetrated the most.

And how do you know this?

I would say the price is very much an issue. Nintendo (unlike Sony or Microsoft) cater to a more varied base of consumers, many of whom I think right now are scared of spending too much because Oprah and Dr. Phil are telling them to be cautious with their spending in a recession.

So casuals I believe are more likely to cut out the video games in times of economic distress.

The DS would likely be down too YoY if it wasn't for the addition of the DSi model.

I don't think online service honestly equals any kind of meaningful sales volume. If it did, Microsoft should be the market leader.
