After reading this thread 1 thing is for certain.

Price cuts are only good for Sony and work for nobody else, a price drop for anyone but Sony is a sign of weakness.

A price cut for any product is a sign of declining value and or commoditization.

Not for Sony. Haven't you visited this site in the past few weeks?

Isn't that the Kotaku hoax again?

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.

Name a electronic product that doesn't have declining value?

If true game trailers podcast crew are crying right now.

At that price its perfect, get a system, free game and enough to buy New Super Mario Bros Wii.

For anyone saying they are surprised that there might be a price cut because Iwata says there wasn't going to be.......why on earth would he talk about a possible price cut months before it actually happened? That would be sales suicide. Price cuts need to be introduced rapidly or tailing off sales in the weeks leading up to an announced price cut is likely to offset any initial boost you might get from the cut.

Having said all that i think just a price cut isn't necessarily the best way to go. I would like if the standard Wii SKU was dropped to 200 and there was a replacement SKU at 250, either a red system bundled with NSWBW, a WSR M+ bundle or a WF+ bundle.

You're right, that is the normal scenario, but in this case he gave reasons for the low Wii sales..... no big releases in this period of the year contrary to 2008, and losing momentum after poor releases on Christmas...... and how they planned to revert the situation, not with price cuts but with software.

After all this years about talking of Nintendo's strategy and doing it accordingly, it's weird to see some contradictions here. Maybe this could benefit them, be a temporary move for a new bundle with Wii Sport Resort, or maybe this won't ever happen. We'll see.

Products decline in value when something comes along that performs the same job better, or for a better price. When there is no substitute, there should be no decline in value. It's different for entertainment products though, which generally need a stream of entertaining content to maintain value (otherwise they become boring).

Yet the Iphone has been immensely popular since launch, has a steady stream of entertaining content, and still has declined in price.

Iphone has clones. They cut the price because they have direct competitors.

I'm starting to think that most people assume that Nintendo don't have any competitors because of the "Casual" "Hardcore" facus whatever. But at the end is still a gaming console and has competitors.
