uhm, PSP is still more powerfull than any DS model, so if DS is 8th gen, PSP is 9th gen

Generations are defined by time, not graphics whores. This is not up for debate. It never has been.

That said  would consider the DSi part of this generation because i's an update of existing hardware...even if it does have exclusive games.

ok, so PSP GO, PS3 Slim and DSi are NEXT GEN because they're/will be launched in 2009. OK, i get your point. Also, brazilian Zeebo is next gen as well as Chinese Vii

but PSP GP, PS3 slim, and DSi are remodels of the same generation, so it doesn't apply.

None of them are new products, it's the same product with a different shell and some minor changes in features.

The next generation starts when the companies say it starts (ie, release a brand new stand alone system).

No, DSi is an incremental upgrade.

Generations have so far always been defined by when a console is built from scratch is released - not a hardware revision (even a major hardware revision such as the DSi) is released. Just like the GBC was still a gameboy the DSi is still a DS.

@BladeOfGod. You are just plain wrong. Look through the wikipedia articles on the generations of video-gaming to get an idea of how the system actually works.

The Go will have exclusive games and doesn't play all regular PSP games, so is it the next generation as well?

There needs to be a bigger change than just a couple exclusive games to call it a new generation.

THAT WAS MY POINT THE ENTIRE TIME

What I'm really wondering is did anyone actually think their answers out?  If Nintendo released the DSi and intended it to be the next generation don't you think they would have advertised it as such?  I'm sure Nintendo could have raked in a hell of a lot more sales if they were saying DSi is the new wave in handheld gaming to put all the others to rest instead of saying the new iteration of DS.  Hmm obviously Nintendo still thinks it is part of the DS series and they show that in their financial reports.  Thus every respectable site keeps it that way.

The point you are all missing is "next generation" is MARKETING not a bar line.  Anything can be marketed as anything.  You can argue technicalities that don't exist about generational differences all you want but the people that decide in gaming when the generation changes is Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony.  And trust me they will not hesitate to tell you they have a next generation console coming out because they know they can generate more hype with that than the latest iteration.

We don't decide when a generation begins or ends.  Sony could release a PS3 that is 2x more power than the current PS3 and if they still group it as a PS3 then it is simply a new iteration.  Sure we can discuss technicalities but they amount to nothing.  Because we all know that if they had intended it to be the next big thing they would have advertised it as such.  Next generation is really just marketing.

This, especially the bolded part.

I do think its part of the current gen, but i also think that the lines between gens are far more blurred with handhelds than consoles, the same rules just dont apply!

I think DSi is a new generation. The same way PS2+Eyetoy was a new gen. And a PS2 with microphone is a new gen. And Wii with balance board is another different gen. And the Wii with WM+. So on so on.

Every single sh*t that comes out that produces exclusive games means a new gen.

Eyetoy could be used on every PS2. Same gen as PS2.

Microphone could be use don every PS2. Same gen as PS2.

Balance board can be used on every Wii. Same gen as Wii.

Now, Monster Finder and System Flaw cant be played on every DS... What does this mean?

If you consider the DSi a new generation... then what exactly is the N64 expansion pak?

There is never a definitive logic behind these things.... but generally DSi will not be considered as a seperate platform from the DS.
