Forums - Sales - Killzone 2 SALES are Very Disappointing (Just Realized)

when CoD4 was released ? Xmas
when R1 was released ? Xmas
when GoW1/2 were released ? Xmas

I m sure KZ2 would have performed A LOT better if it would have been released at a better period ...

question : would those "supposed" better sales still be disapointing ?

Assuming I am recalling correctly, Sony could have released it during Christmas, but chose not to due to competition from GeoW and CoD (not to mention R2). Sony, then, has no one to blame but themselves.

Comparing KZ2 sales to CoD sales is going to look bad, not very many games do look good, sales wise, to CoD. In my opinion, a game that ends up selling over 2 million is fantastic.

oh a profit has 100%ingly been made

Any idea what the budget was for this game?  I've heard $40-50m (take with a grain of salt though), so with say 2 million shipped, it's made a profit, but likely not as much as anyone had hoped.

4 years of development time from a studio who grew up to 130 people in those 4 years. With a PSP title being worked on for 25 months taking some of those 130 people away. Game being nearly completed months before launch with preview codes being a testament to that. Meaning not nearly as many people need to be working on the game during the end of development... especially for those months when it was practically completed. Most generous estimate puts it at 40 million. You are also forgetting about DLC when you take profitablity into account.

I'm hoping that this will have the same leg as Gears of War. People are still buying Slim, give it more time :D

It's actually great u mention Gears of War because that puts things into perspective.

Gears of war is an absolute mammoth. It's got superb reviews, huge amounts of style and cool factor, great marketing, lots of respect and everyone is familiar with it  and it launched on a wider installed base (and like KZ2 the original Gears had lots of hype before release). Now, with this in mind it's quite obvious that it's a hard task for KZ2 to even reach half the sales of Gears.

Gears is basically a 6 million seller while KZ2 is more in the 3 million seller league.

Munkeh - Every number I've seen for KZ2 has put it at, or above $40 million USD.

Essentially, KZ2 had, for some time, 120+ developers on the project. Also, the development time was considerably higher. Given the factors (time + developers), the minimum budget had to of been near the rumors of $40 million, if not more.

I'm not saying it is not far fetched, I just want sources. GG have 140 people, and it was 2 1/2 years between Killzone Liberation and KZ 2, and they would have had devs working on it before then, but this is just speculation. And may I point out that this GeoW 2 cost does not include the engine work that was done seperately, so if you add the 2 GeoWs together, they would probably come to KZ 2. Then again, so would the 2 Uncharteds. The fact is, GG are an inexperienced studio that created loads of new tech for this game, so they will definitely be able to develop games cheaper in the future.

140 people x 2 = 280 man years (extended over 3 years of development, 3 times 90 guys on average if you like)

Each man years costs $150,000.

Total dev cost KZ2: 280 x $150k= $42 million. That's a minimum/conservative estimation in my opinion. And marketing costs excluded of course.

Including marketing, total game creation costs: ~$60 million, so KZ2 will need to sell roughly $60 million/$30 = 2 million copies to break even.
(excluding bundled copies since they don't contribute even one dime in revenue, although bundles help selll consoles and other games of course)

Not sure if it made a profit, crackdown sold 1.5 million and only broke even

But war... war never changes

I think one of the issues when we talk about profit is that 1st party games absolutely, positively, have to make money, and a decent bit, because they are helping offset the (big) losses that hardware takes by the PS3/PS3Slim.

I think ~2.0m for KZ2 is atrocious, and a big bomb given it's critical acclaim (which is excellent). I chalk it up to the PS3 userbase - tier ratios, and the fact there were other viable FPSes on the market.

This game hasn't, and will not have, Gears or any other big shooter-type legs. KZ2 had a decent 1st month (NPD), and abysmal afterwards. It's sad, since it seems to be a good game with a lot of work in it, but with when you have lower attach ratios + 3rd best selling console....Something's gotta give.

That's not to say the PS3 can't sell FPSes, or it doesn't have an FPS audience. I think that it may have been hurt because the first Killzone wasn't well-reviewed, so the baseline may not of been as high - the dev wasn't quite known for spectacular quality (compared to Epic, who made Gears of War).

It happens. Get over it. GT5 is sure to do great, so there'll be plenty of reason to celebrate between that and Slim sales.

Back from the dead, I'm afraid.
