Pokemon is actually linked to Christianity a bit. From what I read in one of my friend's Christian magazines (I'm Catholic, btw), the anime is almost set up in a religious setting. Ash is based upon Jesus, who goes everywhere trying to do good when he can and treats every person and Pokemon equally. Even Noah is mention in the anime when Ash, Misty, Brock, and Pikachu are stranded on the wreckage when the S.S. Anne sinks, and Brock makes a suggestion that Ash send out Pidgeotto to look for a twig from land like Noah did when he sent a dove out to find a tree branch. There was even mentioning of David and Goliath in one of the episodes, even though it was used as a comparison.
And more importantly, each Pokemon is different by elemental types, natures, characteristics and even the stats vary in the same Pokemon species. This is much like how everyone else is different, unique from one another. We all have our own special gifts that sets us apart from one another. That is how people are almost like Pokemon, as we have our own strengths and weakness, likes and dislikes...
Oh, and there was one instance when I was working at the daycare one day and a mother came up to me with her son and she asked me if I could suggest her some games for her son's DSLite. One of the first things I mentioned was Pokemon, and she said, "Oh no, Pokemon isn't allowed in or at our house!" I'm like WTF lady, you let your son watch Bakugan and Yu-Gi-Oh!, but not Pokemon?? O_O And I tell every parent at the daycare not to let their child watch Bakugan (I'm sorry, but throwing marbles around is stupid) because it is not educational at all.
I'd say Pokemon is more educational, the reason being that I learned when I was 15 that heating and cooling metal in rapid succession can cause it to crack and break. I mentioned something like that in 11th grade in chemistry when the teacher asked the class how to break metal. My classmates were amazed by me knowing that and the teacher, in front of class, asked me where I learned that. I said I watched Pokemon and learned it from that. Some girl said, "What?? Pokemon is educational?" I replied, "Yes, you learn manners, how to treat others with respect, to help others in times of need and learn about the elements and problem solving."
