of course natal can do shooters...rail shooters.

How?

You mean with a peripheral?

no...he means rails...the movements of characters are located in and predetermined...like an arcade game shooters. You just sit there, aim, and pull your finger. Maybe they will design it where you can shout bang bang to shoot.

what would a peripheral do to help?  hold your hand out in front of you and calibrate a position to be the center of the screen.  when you move your hand left/right or up/down your aiming thingy does the same.  now the developers just have to remember levels need to be under 10 minutes a piece so your arm does't fatigue too much.

Well ok, that wouldn't be that natural though, you would want to point at what you're shooting, and it would likely be less able to do that than the IR on the Wii remote is.

I suppose it works well enough for Wii Sports Resort archery, but I think most of the time people would want accurate pointing.

The hypothetical peripheral would give more accurate pointing.

Once you have pointing, all you need is an analogue stick and a trigger and an FPS is possible. Natal doesn't have to give up controllers altogether (even if that's how they're currently marketing it, that can change).

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

I'd love to use my M4A1 airsoft gun for shooters.

It will be interesting to see the direction shooters take now that all 3 platform holders have compelling motion solutions (near future). I have to say it is going to take a lot to improve the controller + couch solution that I currently enjoy.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

Natal will definitely be used in conjunction with the 360 controller for some games. MS is marketing controllerless gaming to try and bring in a new audience, that doesn't mean they don't want Natal to be used however devs want to use it.

As far as shooter go, we will not see a typical FP shooter with Natal that is controllerless. Mark my words. It cannot happen and will not happen. Something will have to change, just as this person from Rare has stated. People should just go ahead and get that in their skulls.

to the first part: please describe how hypothetical peripheral would be more accurate? are you implying that it would be something more than a hunk of plastic?  if this hypothetical peripheral has its own set of electronics in order to do pointing then you would also have to conceed that the pointing wouldn't be utilizing natal at all then now wouldn't you.

to the second part: the thing is, the xbox controller is a two handed controller.  so you could either use the xbox controller (which gives you the anaolog stick you need to do movements but won't allow you to point) or not use the xbox controller (which gives you pointing but not movement).  of course there is one other fantasic option, utilize the natal with a one handed remote which for one MS hasn't announced (at least yet) and for two is the exact setup of sony's motion controller thingy.

can anyone summerize the article? i need to go soon

basically...we don't know how to do FPS on natal...but we're gonna pump out some crap to make it happen anyways.

cool thanks

It would be very easy to make the arcadey shooter experiences in next gen graphics with this control scheme. Time Crysis, Sniper, those kinds of games would be a blast and could be bundled together in one package or available on XBLA.

Yes, that's precisely what I'm saying. That's why I said in my first post that Natal would be used for other controls, such as grenade throwing etc. The hypothetical peripheral would be more accurate because it would have a reference point of some kind for the screen (the screen itself or something like the IR in the Wii remote). I don't think Natal on it's own would work very well for shooters of any kind, to be honest.

I think Microsoft will eventually have to concede that peripherals are actually necessary (even if it goes against their marketing). The jab made in the Sony conference, that some experiences need buttons (among other things), was a valid point. I don't think there's anything wrong with bringing out a few peripherals, it's worked well for Nintendo.
