Well ok, that wouldn't be that natural though, you would want to point at what you're shooting, and it would likely be less able to do that than the IR on the Wii remote is.
I suppose it works well enough for Wii Sports Resort archery, but I think most of the time people would want accurate pointing.
The hypothetical peripheral would give more accurate pointing.
Once you have pointing, all you need is an analogue stick and a trigger and an FPS is possible. Natal doesn't have to give up controllers altogether (even if that's how they're currently marketing it, that can change).
