Same thing always happens with the most successful console.

Look at PS1 and Ps2.

That's not really true. The Wii definitly has more shovelware titles than any other console.

I took IGN has an example:

Games ranked between 0 and 1: PS1 = 0, PS2 = 0, Wii = 1

Games ranked between 1 and 2: PS1 = 8, PS2 = 5, Wii = 15

Games ranked between 2 and 3: PS1 = 33, PS2 = 40, Wii = 43

And this gen is far from being over!

Why would you use IGN only? How about we look at sites that collect reviews from different review sites like Metacritic or Gamerankings.

Metacritic - Red (under 50% average)

Wii games  - 82/457 = 17.9%

PS2 Games - 143/1604 = 8.9% .

PS1 Games - 31/252 =12.3%(this is the least accurate though due to how old it is, and underepresented review wise)

Metacritic - Yellow(under 75% average) Doesn't include red or green.

Wii games - 276/457=60.3%

PS2 games - 922/1604 = 57.4%

PS1 Games - 107/252=42.4%

Metacritic - Green(75% and over)

Wii Games 98/457=21.4%

PS2 Games 537/1604=33.4%

PS1 Games 112/252=44.5%

What I can see here is that shovelware(the games that you shouldn't get no matter what), is present on all three consoles at higher degrees than non-winning consoles. My 360 data shows otherwise. Even then though, the majority of the winning consoles have average games(which may warrant a purchase.) As of right now the PS2 has more shovelware than Wii, and the Wii more than the PS. The PS2 has the lowest average of shovelware though. The Wii has the highest. I think that shovelware is only increasing, because the number of games on a single platform is increasing as well. The Wii is now getting more average/above average ratings, and can very well end up with PS1, or even PS2 percentages at the end of it's life.

For comparison though, I would like to add a non-winning console from this generation.

Xbox 360

Red- 76/688= 11.1%

Yellow- 347/688 = 50.4%

Green- 265/688=38.5%

Surprisingly the 360 has almost as many red games as the Wii. It has more Yellow and Green games to balance it out. So this goes to show that the Wii doesn't have over the top amount of shovelware, but a lower amount of  Average/Above Average games. This makes a lot of sense, because it wasn't until recently where 3rd party support has been up to par with the other consoles.

And the worst part is I know people who have some of these games . . .

Yeah me too, very sad.

The people who usually buy them are the unofrmed moms looking for somethign for their kids, they shop based on title and cover art alone.

One time i stopped this lady from buying some "imagine" game and pointed her to Mario Galaxy, she thanked me for it and i'm sure her son was thankful as well.

Jeesh you people should grow a pair.  I have never seen a bigger bunch of babies.

I go in find what I am looking for in the wii erea and buy it

Party Babyz is actually a good game.

"Closing Comments
Yes, Imagine: Party Babyz features dancing toddlers on the cover. Get over it. Even on a console as mini-game saturated as the Nintendo Wii, Party Babyz manages to distinguish itself in every possible category. The challenges are fun and diverse, the controls are solid and varied and the art direction is simple and appealing. Its gameplay is definitely not intended for the toddlers it features on the box, but gamers old enough to grasp the depth and strategy within will have a great time. The game doesn't do anything entirely unique and probably won't convert devout haters of the genre, but gamers looking for a solid new mini-game compilation need look no further."

7.5 Presentation
The art direction is very appealing, though a bit immature for the game's content. The user interface is simple and efficient.
7.5 Graphics
Simple and charming. The stylized direction allows character models to look crisp and animated without any jarring concessions.
7.0 Sound
Adorable baby squeals surprisingly don't get obnoxious, though they do get less adorable after the hundredth time you hear them.
7.5 Gameplay
30 solid, engaging mini-games with tight controls and varied objectives.
7.0 Lasting Appeal
The story mode won't take long to finish, but the multiplayer and customization features extend the life of this title far beyond the narrative's conclusion.
7.5
Good OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

Also, PS2 had the highest % of shovelware last gen. The #1 console always does.

PC + Wii owners unite.  Our last-gen dying platforms have access to nearly every 90+ rated game this gen.  Building a PC that visually outperforms PS360 is cheap and easy.    Oct 7th 2010 predictions (made Dec 17th '08)
PC: 10^9
Wii: 10^8

Yeahh it its sad , last week went to gamestop looking for Deadly Creatures and de Blob , but what i encountered 10 gazillion Horse Titles , my baby this and that, Imagine crap wtf, and when i see the sales fo this titles to teh ones i was looking for it makes me Chuck Norris angrry !!!!

This is why third parties deserved to be bullied by Nintendo in the SNES/NES years.

I don't consider the shovelware on Wii to be a problem, because I don't buy it. There are plenty of non-shovelware titles on Wii that are at least decent and that have kept me entertained enough to keep myself from complaining about it. Will shovelware fade? Probably not, but I don't care.

The problem is that most uninformed buyers make impulse buys, and whatever is that catches their attention the most is what they will end up buying. So, there's a very high % of crappy games on display and very few of the great games actually are on display. It's in fact hurting devs who put some effort a lot. Nintendo should impose some restrictions or else it could turn into an Atari situation.

I'm very sad for those devs who do the best they can, only to find out that a rushed and buggy PS2 port is outselling their game by a big margin. I blame retailers for being uneducated in the gaming business. They just stock whatever they think will sell well, but they overstock so much terrible shovelware that they have to cut the prices really soon and people will just grab those turds because they are cheaper.

I think of uninformed buyers as lottery player, because they get games randomly and they will be very lucky to grab a gem when the majority of games are crap.

Bets with Conegamer:

Pandora's Tower will have an opening week of less than 37k in Japan. (Won!)
Pandora's Tower will sell less than 100k lifetime in Japan.
Stakes: 1 week of avatar control for each one.

Fullfilled Prophecies

Where else can you sell games like Game Party and Deca Sports and get 1 million plus sales?

That's why there is so much shovelware.

Of course, there is a hope that consumers will eventually be turned off by these type of games after repeatedly buying them and discovering the utter crapulence.

Turns out... no. Game Party 2 is nearing 1 million.

It doesn't make much sense when you're comparing the whole amount of bad games when you have the percentages right next to it.

And I personally don't think that any of them will change dramatically.

Actually, looking at the charts of Game Party 1 and 2, Deca Sports, and Carnival Games it's quite interesting to see that the sales of these have drastically slowed down.

It might be true that their utter crapulence is becoming better known and hence avoided by casual consumers. Perhaps those shovelcompanies will redeem themselves by trying to make good games or going out of business.

But then, there goes Nintendo's 3rd party support.
