Forums - General Discussion - so, What do people make of this?

It's a shame you consider it a "problem" when opposition parties don't agree with the release of a mass murderer.

Eh.  Happy Libya is better then keeping a mass murderer behind jail for a few more months.

It's not like he's going to get another shot to pull it off again.

Most likely the US gov gave their support for this behind the scenes anyway and is just playing the outrage card to play it up to the voters.

Afterall nobody did more to bring Libya back into the international fold then the US.

Had he died in Scotland he'd of gone in Libya as a great national hero who was martyred by the west.

Now he'll either be seen as proof the "west" is changing (in reality Momar is changing and using less propganda)

or that Momar isn't going to be as helpful as he once promised to be.

Either way... the US and EU will know where they stand with Libya better.

Its a shame when opposition parties use it as a way to attack a government who is following laws that they themselves have used.

While most in Scotland could agree with the Scottish elements of the unionist parties having an input. David Cameron etc have no say on internel scottish law and should not be stirring this up in the rest of the UK. This was a scots decision and if the majority of us decide we don't like it the Nationalists won't be in power after the next election.

Well that's very much ignoring the outside pressure that was put on them to reach this decision doesn't it?

Afterall there is a lot of proof pointing to the fact that the only reasons they were really considering it were negotiations between Momar Quaddaffi and Gordon Brown... along with other Libyian inroads to people.

This all happened soley because Libya wanted it to happen.  It had nothing to do with the law.

It's no more "right" lawfully then when some US president pardons his friends.  The US president has the right to pardon people... but when he uses that position to pay back friends or help an agenda...

It does leave him up for criticism.

I mean if Barak Obama suddenly pardoned Charls Manson or some other derranged serial killer.  It would be well within the legal system and his right to do so...

still I think people would be upset.

Do you really think the Nationalist government in Scotland would do anything to help Gordon Brown?

This was for them a decision based on the law.

If they had been pushed by Gordon Brown etc to release him they would already be screaming it from the roof tops.

Showing that the UK government was interfering in Scottish decisions would insure that the nationalists would win the next election and Gordon Brown can't afford to let that happen. Especially when it looks like the Conservatives are going to win many more english seats at the next UK election.

That's called 'compassion' in Scotland.
Maybe Obama should just be a little more compassionate to Bin Laden and forget all about 9-11.

David Cameron has every right to comment on this. He's the shadow/next Prime Minister of ALL the UK. Are you saying that Maggie had no right to comment on Lockerbie back in 88?

The Americans also have every right to give their opinion without being accused of bullying poor little Scotland. Lockerbie lost 11 people, America lost 180. The bomb exploded on an American plane in Scottish airspace. It could just have easily exploded over some remote field without killing anyone on the ground but 180 Americans and 41 Brits would have still perished.

Was internal scottish affairs devolved when lockerbie happened? Answer no.

Does David Cameron have any say on internal scottish affairs? Answer no.

Was he tried by a scottish court under scottish law? Answer Yes.

Does that mean he should be treated as others are treated? Answer yes and that means he should be treated as decided by our laws. The law can't be changed just because of international pressure placed on a government by other countries.

Do people still have the right to comment on this stupid decision made by a stupid politician? Answer  Yes.

So your ignoring the fact that Momar Quadaffi actually credited the release to Gordon Brown?

Yes but at least try to look like you know what your talking about.
