Forums - Website Topics - 5 ads per page is a little much, agree?

Everyone always wants something for free, and then complains about it

Over here I have never seen talking ads on this site... I guess it depends on the regions.

Not really. Dedicated hosting isn't cheap, and I'd imagine they need to pay out quite a bit for VGC.

I'm not fussed about how many there are, as long as:
1. not pop-up
2. they dont obscure anything, or expand to obscure anything.
3. McAfee doesn't start shouting at me.

None of the three have happened in a long while, I don't use ad-block on here, but have no-scripted whenever I find something that McAfee deems dangerous.

The talking ads don't really get to me as I have VGC muted by default, I don't mind the adverts at all, really.

I think I probably generate more click-through revenue (if this site gets that) by mot, because I have a habit of clicking everywhere on the screen (highlighting the text I'm currently reading, etc), and I click on ads by mistake oh-so-many times.

Well it's up to you guys - otherwise we start to charge a monthly subscription for the data.

Most pages have just four ads and most of the ads on this site (if you are in the US) should be game related, at least for the first ~20 page views per session. You should be seeing good stuff like Batman, Aion, NFL Rush, Metroid Prime Trilogy, World of Warcraft, AT&T, MTV VMAs, Tekken 6, Snickers, Magic the Gathering and loads more - we've worked hard to secure these ads to enable the site to continue to grow and to give you guys good, relevant ads. The better these ads perform, the more of them we will get in the future.

By using adblockers you are basically saying "I'm gonna use this site but not give anything back for doing so" which is your choice, but like I say if things get to a point where the data is no longer free and we have to start generating revenue through memberships then you will have had a hand in that.

If a particular ad annoys you - send me a PM and tell me about it, preferably with a screenshot. Annoying ads are generally either:

1. Someone has put some malicious code in a signature or something
2. An ad network we work with has allowed an ad they shouldn't

In both cases, the problem should be rectified - but you need to tell me about it.

I don't want to be putting out ads that talk or ads that are annoying (and encourage you to tell me about these ads) but the site does need ads to run and when times are slow as they are at the moment we need to do what we can to increase revenues. If 25% of you are using ad blockers we need 4 ads rather than 3 per page and so on. I don't think ads are particularly excessive - no worse than IGN or Gamespot or any other game site. The interstitial and anchor ads should only show once per session and like I say on most pages you should get four ads, except for long pages where we can put an extra one in as well.

Also, without sounding too arsy - one of the issues we've had securing decent ads is that advertisers want to have their ads placed on pages that are of a "high quality" and don't show inappropriate content. Now I have no issue whatsoever with it personally, but the OP's signature doesn't help us when trying to secure these good ads, neither does some of the language used. Unfortunately some of you guys want it all - a free, open site where you can do what you want but don't have to do anything to help it

How about giving the UK some good ads, rather than ads for razors and online poker?

Site now runs like shit on my work PC and it is even affecting my laptop now.

It is getting beyond annoying.

Can't you allow a premium membership or something for those who wish to rid themselves of the annoying ads? It will help them and help you in the process.

Separating members between premium/non-premium members would just encourage more privileges given to premium members versus regular members.

@Words of Wisdom

No ads and a cleaner, quicker running site should be more than enough considering they would probably be the people who spend a good chunk of time here. You could give them their own dedicated forum area too if you really wanted. Would actually benefit those who would like to have more civilized discussions since you would most likely never see those alt troll accounts.

@ioi

Depends on the pricing. When I was at QJ.net we had a premium membership where all they did was take away ads, give premium members a dedicated forum space and a nifty little tag under their username. Not sure of the price though. I was a mod so I got premium membership at no charge.

If they pay for it it would benefit them while not harming your revenue. If people do not pay for it, would you really be losing out on anything by having the option available?

I know there were people here in favor of it. You should try a poll and see what the overall response is.

Good to know...I didn't realize that the "talking" ads were not supposed to be here, glad to know you are trying to keep them off.
