Forums - Sony - Two Heavy Rain gamepla videos contains full of Awesomness

@warren @ slimebeast

1) Dudes, it's far from an interactive movie. Anyone who has played Fahrenheit/ indigo Prophecy would know better! You can't even argue that at any level. It is as simple and factual as that.

2) there were no QTE's in the 2 videos, so anyone going on about QTEs cab STFU. The video had dialogue options and interactive options. QTE's are quick time events- take note of the words QUICK and TIME.

3) this game is starting to play out more like Yu Suzukis masterpiece Shenmu than any pc adventure I know (but with no fight mechanics). Anyone who has played Shenmue will probably agree, and there is not a single person I know who has defined Shenmue as an interactive film.

4) Didnt anyone even think about the change of gameplay had the detective used stealth and walked up behind the robber from the isle closest to the door?

5) an interactive movie is more like the garbage which was released on the Sega Mega CD. No variation, just QTEs for 30-40 minutes. If anyone has actually played an interactive movie, they WILL know the difference rather than just speculating.

6) and if you guys really want to be fair, why not take a similar more linear game and call that an interactive movie. In other words, apply this principle throughout the board. The game in question is Snatcher on the mega cd by Hideo Kojima! You point, you click, you choose dialogue, you investigate. No walking, no branching storylines, just one character, lots of cutscenes and the only action came from the odd interactive shhoting galleryish sections. If you apply your set of interactive movie principles, then you should have no problems calling Snatcher, Monkey Island and Discworld interactive movies. Be fair!

@ CGI

We have to understand that not everyone appreciates HR for what it is. To some Lamborghini's are just another car, to others they are a whole lot more. Only a connaisseur will appreciate the differences the game has to offer :)

1. I need Zenfoldor to help me argue in this thread. He adores Indigo Profecy, but he would agree that IP and HR both are interactive movies.

2. it's the same principle as QTE's no matter what you call these trigger-events in HR. 'Quick' they're perhaps not, but we can call them "STE's" if you wanna.

6. I am fair. I am calling those games interactive movie's too. All the FMV video adventure games of the 90's were interactive movies, including two of my favorite adventure games of all time - the fantastic Gabriel Knight II: The Beast Within, and Phantasmagoria.

Looks like it will be pretty good.

Ok, I've been called.

First, let me say, I LOVED Indigo Prophecy. It was one of my favorite games on XBL. That's when I first played it. Heavy Rain is obviously a spiritual sequel, and the game looks to play exactly like IP, and has obviously been drawn upon the same framework as that game.

I think the term "Interactive Movie" is a buzzword.

However, in this case, it does fit the game rather well.

The games themselves are storybased. The majority of your input is quicktime events, and storypath decisions. You rarely even walk your "character" around, and you really don't have a "character." You play the game through many different eyes.

There is nothing wrong with this, because that is why the game is so charming. The storyline is excellent and enthralling, and the interactivity gives you the requisite immersion.

The QTE's are much better than they are in say, RE5, and they aren't all life or death action. The ability to change the story path, and to "screw up" the story leads to excellent replay value, and I highly recommend IP, and can't wait for HR.

That said, and don't take this as an insult, calling this game an interactive movie is a compliment. It's as good as a movie, and more engrossing, so in this case, that phrase does kind of make sense. Game stories usually suck. QD innovates by trying to change that. Their quirky innovations lie in scenerio rather than gameplay, and basically, this is the MGS4 of interactive film-making, and a tie-in between two entirely different genres of entertainment.

Whatever you want to call it, it's excellent, and you should preorder.

I don't need your console war.

You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.

Compliment or not, this game is still an Adventure game, the whole beef that started this argument in the first place is from a comment I made in which I praise HR as being the rebirth of the adventure game genre in HD, whatever terms you wish to attribute it, the game already fits the criteria of pre-existing genre, saying it has the attribute of an interactive movie is fine so long as you acknowledge that this is still an adventure game.

The deliberate use of the term 'interactive movie' in this case was not complimentary, it was use to argue that the game wasn't an adventure game and implies a strong sense derogative criticism starting from a post waron made. Even more infuriating, it turns out he didn't even know what a bloody adventure game is. (He thought Tomb Raider was an adventure game and call people out for defending the use of the term adventure game to classify this game).

So yes labeling is fine, especially on something as new and innovative as Heavy Rain. If the term of usage had not being aggressively overriding, the most you would have gotten from me was a shrug and a  'that's your opinion'.

What I find offensive is when you try to assert your own labeling as the definitive truth, especially when you don't know shit about what you're talking about.

I'm sold! I've been sold on this game for months and months. Now, like with Batman: Arkham Asylum and Metal Gear Solid 4, I must shield myself from any info pertaining to this game until I play it!

I had already seen the videos and the game is looking beautiful, absolutely beautiful, the animations, the way your character thinks on the spot and has to react to situations, fantastic stuff!!! I've been following HR pretty much sinse day 1 and at this point it's pretty much SOLD!!!

FOREVER IN DARKNESS!!!

Why is SkyNet wearing a PS3 Logo???

When that robber put his gun in his pants I thought he was going to accidentally shoot himself like Plaxico Burress.

Good post...

I just wanted to point out that mibuokami wasn't implying that I don't know shit about what I'm talking about.

To more thoroughly translate, he is saying, "a rose by any other name" basically.

However, in this case, the term "interactive movie" was malovelently used, with the intention of marginalizing the game, and he was calling a few fanboys out on that. Bravo to him on that one.

As for the whole "which genre is this game" I've had a great discussion with Kaz on that when it concerned the hack and slash genre being reinvented by the original DMC, so if you can dig that up, it's a pretty great discussion.

Anyway, yes, this is a story based game, with very unique gameplay. It couldn't be considered a reinvention of the adventure genre, because Indigo Prophecy exists, however, it is in a genre that has not been truely defined. I'd consider it it an interactive game heavily based upon films and narrative. IP was very innovative, even if you don't like the QTE based gameplay, it was still very interesting, and everyone should play either IP or HR just to treat themselves to a new type of interaction.

Yhatzee would call it Branston pickle.

BTW, CGI, I've been one of the only non-Sony fanboy adament supporters of this game since day one, you should treat me like a rare gem.
