Forums - General - The "That's so Gay" is a dumb thing to say thread.

I figured that out when you banned me for saying it.

I actually use it more now, because it's one of the few words Sony doesn't censor on the PS3 chat rooms.

I hate it when it's used like that. It's not like I chose to be this way, it just happened at birth.

Maybe in the future I'll have equal rights though. That'll be nice.

I'm not trying to be an ass, but there is technically not much proof either way.

My friend said that the other day and I just looked at him for 2 mins...... like why? And he's "yeah it's kind of wierd coming from a gay guy right?" I just said " it's just stupid...even for gay people to say that"

No, I did not mean choice, I meant the environment you were brought up in. There isn't that much proof for it being genetic (I do believe that is the case though but I could be wrong) or being caused by your environment. It seems like it could be a toss-up either way.

Think of it this way. Fetishes are usually caused by subconsciouslly associating something with anything that is either good or pleasurable. The environment you were brought up in could dicate your feelings. But then again, whomever you are attracted to is pretty cut and dry. Everybody probably always likes either a man or a woman. You don't see anyone being attracted to a microwave.

The only way to determine it would be to have a group of hundreds of kids since birth and put them in isolation until puberty and see what happens. But it is too morbid of an experiment. It would be the perfect test for the general population, but not for the individual.

This is why I say that's lame.

"Lame" can be considered incredibly offensive to the disabled. I'm sure you could go through hundreds of insults and swear words with similar origins. I agree with the majority of the people on this thread who say that you're not going to change the way people speak and it really isn't that important.

If, however, the gay community want to try and do something about it by advertising-force using campaigns such as this, then fair enough. If it helps them achieve something they want then more power to them. If I were the kind of person who used this phrase, however (and I'm not), then I wouldn't feel obliged to take any notice.

I'd like to reiterate what someone said about the word "dumb". Its origins are very clearly related to describing those who cannot or who have trouble speaking. It shouldn't matter that most people use it to just mean "stupid".

So would you bite the bullet on this, Stof, and argue that people should reconsider how they use the myriad of similar phrases?

I was thinking of that as well. However, I don't know any disabled people so I guess I am safe. But then again, it's still not nice.
