No, I did not mean choice, I meant the environment you were brought up in. There isn't that much proof for it being genetic (I do believe that is the case though but I could be wrong) or being caused by your environment. It seems like it could be a toss-up either way.
Think of it this way. Fetishes are usually caused by subconsciouslly associating something with anything that is either good or pleasurable. The environment you were brought up in could dicate your feelings. But then again, whomever you are attracted to is pretty cut and dry. Everybody probably always likes either a man or a woman. You don't see anyone being attracted to a microwave.
The only way to determine it would be to have a group of hundreds of kids since birth and put them in isolation until puberty and see what happens. But it is too morbid of an experiment. It would be the perfect test for the general population, but not for the individual.
