Give some credit to Sony ppl; at least the lose money in order to make you buy the console, whereas Nintendo steals from you in open sight.

lol, steals from you?

lol.

lol.

i think it's standard to sell things for more than it costs to make them to make a profit. not everyone uses the loss-lead model.

When you sell older technology ( processin-wise ) for an insanely high price, you're stealing. I once read in a magazine ( NGamer UK) that Nintendo ( and in particular Shigeru-san) wanted to price Wii at about 100$ but two factors contributed to the high pricepoint:

1) High cost parts ( Flash memory etc)

2) Big-chain retailers complaining about the low-margin profit from each unit sold.

Holy shit!!! Coca Cola has been selling me their old ass classic formula for years and has been making profit. Those damn crooks.

Funny how neither the PS3 nor the 360 has that old motion control technology and yet charges only a meager $499 and $349, respectively.

I once read on a napkin (McDonald's) that Sony wanted the PS3 to be $100 dollars too, but several factors contributed to the high pricepoint:

1) Blu-Ray Drive

2) Cell

3) what was your point again?

You can never assume anything in regards to what Sony will or will not do. Few things they do make sense until you realize they are being driven by desperation. The desperate are capable of doing anything at any time. Were there a logic that said Sony could save a billion dollars by only having one sku then Sony would probably choose this sku and discontinue all others.

Every company is desperate...... to make more money. Sony now offers consumers more choices, I don't see any difference from what Microsoft did. Sooner or later, Nintendo will launch another SKU. This is simply the nature of console war at this generation.  Why not just accept the fact and embrace it! Buy sooner, you enjoy first; buy later, you get better deal!

No, No, that's quite wrong. Not every company is desperate, Nintendo for example is anything but desperate at this point. Sony is the only one of the big three showing any real desperation, selling off assets, stripping down features in the PS3 and abandoning the ideals of super high graphic gaming for lower graphic longer gameplay titles. And spin it however you like but Sony didn't make multiple SKUs to give you choices, they did it to try and rectify the problem of their product not selling.

... well , whoever wants next-gen will get it . I wont buy a PS3 in the near future anyways ... nor any other curent-gen console ... though I could buy myself a new slim PS2 with an LCD screen :P

@mancandy & rage4dorder:

From my point of view:

Gamecube (at the moment): 99$
Wii : 249$

Wii > Gamecube but not enough to warrant a ~150$ difference...

And by saying "stealing" I was obviously speaking metaphorically...

But you do have more choices now, don't you?  All the companies are the same, they want your money.  It's called business!

Microsoft also released multiple SKU and now all the SKU have HDMI.  That's not desperation?  That's not rectifying the problem of their product?  Be subjective, please!

How did you know the only purpose that Sony IPO their insurance business is to save PS3?  What is your source?  Yes, Sony made some stupid judgement in multiple arms of their core business before (first LCD TV, then MP3 player, now PS3), but they are trying to catch up.  They are doing very well with their LCD TV, aren't they?  Whether they will do it again on their Playstation business, we will see.  I do see PSP doing pretty well lately.

Back to the topic, I don't see anything wrong with their multiple SKU strategy.  Do you hear people complaining when they buy a computer or a car for too many choices.  If you want something more, pay for it.  Here I quote:

By saying that, you are including every company in the world. All companies try to make profit.

compatibility with PS2 titles."

Sounds more like blackmail to me.
