Forums - Website Topics - New Poll - why do you visit VGChartz?

My thought for the homepage is exactly that - organised vertically as someone suggested earlier.

A large section at the top of the page going right across dedicated to sales, below that some news (but smaller and neater than we have now), below that some game database links and at the bottom the community stuff. Each section will be clearly seperated with a nice big link to their dedicated pages which serve as a mini-homepage for just that section - these would be gamedb.vgchartz.com, news.vgchartz.com etc. By branding each seperately I was thinking something like "VGChartz GameDB" or whatever - so still obviously part of VGC but with a unique identity...

Thank you! I'm quite happy with this, I was still not sure whether you were considering completely separating the parts of the site from VGC, but I see that that's not the case.

As someone else said, it's important to emphazise what is unique to VGC, the sales, the prediction league, etc.

If it's possible, maybe expand on the editorials n'stuff? Bring back roundtables, maybe invite some members in.

And for naming, for the database, I'd maybe take a leaf out of the IMDB book and call it VGDB or something. And might I suggest we take another feature from IMDB, and maybe include info like voice actors in the DB?

I didn't get a chance to read the entire thread, I'll do that when I get the chance.

I really like that idea aswell, instead of putting so much in the front page, just put sales as a big part of the front page then the rest like you said news and games can have there own seperate page.

Around the Network

I come for most of the gaming news and Rolstoppable. I would come for more discussions, but hey you know. Internet + Anonymity = ?.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

I come to VGC because it has the most intelligent mature community I've ever seen on a videogame website. Great reviews, great news, and the most in depth sales information I've ever seen.

Just answering the poll in this thread: I came to this site for sales figures and only that. Now, I've beel lurking/posting for some time now and I like the community, so no harm in psoting threads with games news, etc... But I did feel with the change to 2.0, sales to a back seat.

I feel this site should be sales oriented first and foremost.

Must say that it has been several weeks now that I feel the site has found a good rythm again (probably due to sales numbers being more interesting with the big Nintendo releases of the past weeks: DQ9, WSR and now MH3).

Anyway, Brett keep up the good work. This IS my video game site (along with www.gamekult.com as it is French and I like their reviews).

Elaine: I will never understand people

Jerry: They're the worst.

This site was discussed on Slashdot recently as a typical example of a site bringing itself down with too much bloat. I can only agree; with the sales figures now buried between other content and the site being so slow it often doesn't load at all, I enjoy it much less than before the redesign and therefore visit less frequently. Also, and this is subjective, the new design looks worse than the old one: a bit depressing and too generic really. In any case, way too cluttered.

Splitting off the sales figures in a separate site seems like a good idea if it'll make that site lighter again. Though I would like to keep reading news about upcoming games - that's relevant to sales after all. With a better design, it could be combined. Right now, the very latest news is only accessible through that annoying flash headline flipper which forces you to wait - that's just bad design.

So ok, back to what we do best:

  • Sales charts
  • Forums / community (you guys to thank for that!)
  • News
    • General news
    • Original articles (reviews / features / sales articles) - needs to be seperated from general news I think
  • Game database (although maybe we're trying to do a little too much with cheats / extras / user reviews unless we can promote it more as a stand-alone game db)

So maybe focus on these four core areas in terms of what is presented on the homepage and maybe have news and game database as seperate portals with just basic links on the homepage?

Now, let me first say that I have the stomach to criticise a bit because I love this site.

Core, yes. Focus is very important. The unique thing of VGC is the sales info - no other site comes close to this! The game database closely tied to sales numbers is awesome. (sadly ioi u are alone in updating sales numbers, which means due to time constrains many games have outdated sales numbers, even many big games need sales updates asap. But the other info in the database updates a lot more reliably, like release dates, screenshots (thanks the the big team helping I suppose).

Let other things grow slowly and only implement if they truly bring something valuable, because I already think VGC has expanded a bit too quickly on the expense of quality.

For example, there should be a guy filtering out the worthless news. Since 2.0 there's been lots of un-interesting news posted. Some examples:

The list is endless. IMO these dont belong on a front page. The good news are drowned in this flood of useless niche information. I dont know if these examples are 'general news' or 'original articles', all I know is that I stumble upon these too often, so lately I have stopped watching the news articles almost completely and rely on the forums instead or other sites for important gaming news.

It's worth is little. Well I certainly don't agree about worthless news - a news post that gets 500-1000 people viewing isn't worthless.

I think vgChartz could put out a news article on the mating of hamsters and get 500-1000 views.  Stricter guidelines about what is and isn't newsworthy would be welcome.

@ slimebeast

News that doesn't appeal to you isn't worthless news. How is an XBL update, key functionality to the DSi, and new releases on online channels worthless?
