If I got to take one console to a desert island with me, where I would stay for the rest of my days...

(A) Console never breaks, and power is not a concern.

(B) Cost of the console, and any media is not a concern.

(C) You get all the games the console can play, any music it can play, and any movie it can play.

(D) Online play is free, even if there is "usually" a charge, and the connection is top-notch.

60GB launch PS3, easily. No other console even comes close. Even if the movies and music didn't come to the island, it would still be the 60GB PS3.  If there was a king, in the gamer's eyes... that'd be it, I think.

Strange question, though.

The combined PS1/PS2/PS3 library, along with PSN ...
vs.
The combined GC/Wii library, along with WiiWare AND VIRTUAL CONSOLE!!!

If you don't count movies, which the Wii can't play, are you so sure?

Yup.  The Wii is a strong contender (I have a lot of VC and GC games, too), but the PS2 library alone trumps it, I'm afraid.  I own a 60GB PS3, and a hella lotta PS1, PS2, PS3 games.  Its a dream machine.. particularly with the upscaling on PS1 games.  They look amazing on the big screen.

Speaking of the Wii's VC, though, I am totally into the RPGs at the moment... just finished Shining Force (was *awesome*), and now I'm workin' on Breath of Fire 2 (again... I love it).

Still.. there aren't enough.  The BC PS3 combo library kicks the crap out of any other console in existance.  I adore my Wii and 360, and their BC, etc... but if I had to choose, the choice is clear.  There's only one King.

PS1 & PS2 games do not belong to the PS3 era. You're still only praising the PS3 for its power, rather than the overall package. The SNES offered way more than the PS3 to gamers. When someone says king of the consoles, it means they are really talking about a top system of a generation that surpasses all. In that respect, the PS3 is no comparison.

When someone says "King of Consoles", it's their opinion. There are plenty of people who didn't care for the winning consoles of a generation, and this gen is no different.

I say, the "King" is what YOU want it to be. Fighting over a petty label is useless...

Super NES wasn't my favorite console. I am just judging things based on all around activity. I was more of a fan of the Dreamcast. I guess thats why I am so close to the 360. It feels like a clear successor to the Dreamcast. Everything from the controller to the system qualities if you think about it.

The SNES didn't have even remotely as large of a software library as the PS3.

The thread asked which console was the King.  I took that to mean "in reality, without any silly 'only consider this subset of entertainment, from this generation'" restrictions.

A BC PS3, easily.  As I stated.

In your restricted world, where you bend the rules to your own whims, I'm sure there are a lot of interesting outcomes.  In my restriction-free world (I like to call it "real life"), where I see a console capable of playing thousands upon thousands of games, and far more than any of its competitors, the BC PS3 is quite clearly the King.

If you hate all things PlayStation, Stage, then I can totally understand why the PS3's titanic library has no appeal for you.  Your choice totally makes sense, from that perspective.

What the hell are you talking about? The PS3's library couldn't hold a candle to the SNES library even though it had 785 games. A BC PS3 may play games not of its generation, but a Nintendo Wii plays its games and more, which makes the value way higher. BC means only one thing...and thats the capability to relive nostalgia, which even though some PS3's might have it, it shows just how dear previous generations of playstation consoles were to us. I am not in a restricted world. You live in a world where power is king and depth, gameplay, and gamer moral mean nothing. I don't hate on all things Procrastinato, but the PS3 wouldn't even make the top 5 of the greatest systems of all time. The PS2 and PSX were far greater (despite Sony playing dirty). The PS3 doesn't have a titanic library of games. It's a young console with a growing amount of games. No console this gen can contend to be the greatest of all time. They are all lacking in one way or another.

Reasons why the SNES was king:

1. When the SNES was in existence, it was considered the "Golden Age" of gaming.

2. No other system had more variety in games.

3. Gamer moral was extremely high on the SNES

4. Saving games was not a hassle.

5. Nintendo have always been known for quality hardware that wont break on you.

6. Ruled the gaming era in a time before people felt like they were being had by corporate entities.

7. Had best and most first party games.

8. Was Nintendos crowning achievement for most ergonomic controller. Many controllers after would emulate the SNES controller

9. Nintendo had the most first party gear for the system out of any other company.

Jeez folks you take this shit way to serious.
I mean do you reckon MS or Sony really care?

Snes is the king but if PS3 married it, the PS3 would atleast be the queen.

The Wii shall be KING!!!

NINTENDO

Although the PS2 is the "sales" King, my King(s) (YES I HAVE TWO) have always been the PS1 and the SNES. PS3 is great, but not the King.....

.....yet!

I can understand the SNES, but the PS1?

King of current gen consoles? I say yes and I only say that because it has the games I really enjoy playing. No one can quote me and prove otherwise because this is my opinion and is therefore fact. Plain and simple.

I got Disgaea, Buzz, Unreal Tournament III, LittleBIGPlanet, etc... No need to make a big list but point is that the PS3 has more games that I personally enjoy than either of the 3 out.

This changes though because earlier this year I loved the 360 most of all, so much that I did not touch my PS3 for 34 days. That was only due to Tales of Vesperia really and had that game come to PS3 my 360 would have been collecting dust, much like it is doing so right now since out of the blue the Wii has taken over it's spot in my gaming life.

King of Consoles all time however? Easy choice, my PC.

I would have went and said the SNES because of the absolutely awesome JRPG collection but I also loved my SEGA Genesis to death. With my trusty laptop I get to enjoy them both and don't need to shell out $6-$8 per game.

To be honest I could easily make a personal case for why I think the PS1 is greater than the SNES. I loved my SNES, I loved StarFox, FFVI, FFIV, Secret of Mana, Super Mario World, etc...

On my PS1 however that was my personal JRPG Golden Age. I had Vagrant Story, FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, remakes of FFIV, V, VI and Chrono Trigger (Yes I actually played through them all even with the loading), Xenogears, SaGa Frontier and SaGa Frontier 2, I even enjoyed Jade Cacoon, Front Misson, Final Fantasy Tactics, the list goes on and on.

It could easily be my tops. To be honest it just might because I never enjoyed gaming as much as I did during the PS1 era.
