Forums - Nintendo - Why Wii is the console with the most value

puffy said:

A videogame console is a means to prevent software made for that particular console from being used, unless the user owns said console.

No matter how many times I read this sentence, it still fails to make sense.

no seece, you have to read it :P In summary value = benefits/costs (the top games give Wii the highest benefit in ownership) it's a fairly simple concept and one Nintendo lives by.

But what if you're not into the 'top games'? then the Wii isnt beneficial to that person at all.

In reality and generally, the console with the most value is the one that comes with the games/features the buyer desires thats why they buy it in the first place.  And in time the buyer's desire can change to what the other console has and then it could be beneficial as well but it doesnt neccessarily mean that the Wii has the highest benefit due to 'top games' and being the lower cost.

Well if that person likes to buy a nice pretty box to look at then that's fine by me but they are called games consoles for a reason. Yes other factors have to be considered when looking at the benefits but no matter which way you spin it, Wii has outsold the other two consoles which means the consumers have voted with their wallets which console has the highest value and looking at the differences in games, the long tail nature of the top and lesser selling titles.. As well as the changes from generations, it all points to Wii's main benefit coming from exclusive software not available or not possible (due to motion controls) on other consoles.

Yes I agree that a buyer's desire can change but I'm not trying to predict the future here, I'm merely outlining the fact that Wii is the console with the most value because people consistantly choose it over the competition, why? Because of the games.

If anybody does marketing, could you please explain this because somehow my explanation is too hard for people to comprehend..

It's not. What it is is some folks don't want to comprehend what is being said.

Bet between Slimbeast and Arius Dion about Wii sales 2009:

If the Wii sells less than 20 million in 2009 (as defined by VGC sales between week ending 3d Jan 2009 to week ending 4th Jan 2010) Slimebeast wins and get to control Arius Dion's sig for 1 month.

If the Wii sells more than 20 million in 2009 (as defined above) Arius Dion wins and gets to control Slimebeast's sig for 1 month.

Puffy, this is the best thread in a long while.

What he did that no one else does is look at consumers. He said "Ahh, the Wii is selling because they value something that the other consoles (or other medias) do not offer." This is very consumer focused.

Many people argue that Sony has the most value because of all the stuff they have. But, the consumer doesn't care about them. We know that most people can not tell the difference between standard and high definition, so the main value of the PS3 (HD graphics and Blu-Ray) are not what the consumers value. No, they just want a fun game that's easy to pick up. Wii Sports provides that. Mario Kart Wii provides that. Customers are smart as they only buy what they want to buy (at least in entertainment). If something is selling better then something else, there is a reason.

If you say so.

I strongly disagree.

Actually Hexic HD is a 20 million seller on the Xbox 360.
Weird that you did not include it in your list, yet Wii Sports is in there.......

He's coming at it from the wrong angle. He's describing it from the console maker's point of view as a DRM device when he should be describing it as the consumer buying the ability to run certain software.

@ V-r0ck

He's just aggregating. Value is subjective. It would be more accurate to say that the Wii has the most value to the most people. I'm sure there are many people who value the PS3, 360, or PSP more than the Wii, there are simply more who value the Wii over those systems.

Seriously, did you read the OP? I explained quite clearly why the Wii has the most value. Value is mostly in the games this generation where as Sony and Microsoft put more effort into the hardware. The fact that these games sold so much and they corralate to very high hardware sales is the proof, and no, this isn't a joke thread :P

I tried but by the second paragraph it was like "blah blah blah" I'm sorry I got bored.

I did notice you highlighted the top ten games of this gen ... how though you relate the sales of certain games to = value is beyond me though, maybe you should sum up your thread at the end?

How can you opt out of reading the OP and then ask questions about it?

OT: The logic seems flawed. Saying the Wii offers value because it offers the best selling games and thus, the games most "valued" by consumers isn't complete. I think this needs to be switched to attach rate as a percentage seems most reflective of "users on that consoles wants"

I got nothing against the Wii as i plan to get one myself (cause im finding it more beneficial).  But like you said, because of the games.  Agreed with that part since alot of Wii games sold many times over more than the other consoles.

But say here, my boss' wife bought a Wii simply for Wii Fit only.  I currently own a PS3 with almost 20 games.  But does that mean that my boss' wife got the better value just from that one game while I dont get the better value in all the games im enjoying on my PS3?  Not saying alot of Wii owners only buy one game, but you 'outline' the fact that having the Wii is better value just cause of the games.   So Xbox360/PS3 owners got screwed over cause our games arent valuable to us.

And nobody buys a nice pretty box to look at, they buy it to use it cause they are indeed game consoles.

Again, the "highest benefit in ownership" for a system is the one that finds it most useful.  Just cause the Wii sold the most doesnt make it THE highest benefit.  I have a friend thats trying to sell his Wii so hows the Wii beneficial for him?
