Louie - For me it would boil down to this: Game to play by myself or game to play against other people. If you're looking for both then... I'm not sure. Personally I would take Wave Race 64 over Mario Kart ANY day.

Er Zelda Ocarina of Time a 10? Did it occur to them you'll need the "rumble" to complete the entire game by finding all the skulltulas and heart containers? I guess not...

Great thread by the way ;)

I would go for Paper Mario / Mario Story, that game is truly awesome. One of the best in the series IMO.

Cool list. I still want to see these games though:

Axelay
Cybernator
Yoshis Island (SNES)
Super Smash TV

I'd like to see Kid Icarus up there. It's a real gem of a game.

Kid Icarus is up! I looked at the IGN review and they marked it down because the cheat codes have been disabled. I'm not sure if that is much of a criticism. I played through the first level of Kid Icarus a few days ago and I think it holds up well. A tight platformer that scrolls up and down instead of side to side. I remember when it first came out it wasn't as popular as Mario because of the difficulty. I would give it an 8 and would like to see a true sequel.

I can't recommend Yoshi's Story on VC. If you want the greatest Yoshi Platformer get Yoshi's Island on the DS, great game.

Edit: Yes, Kid Icarus does scroll side to side on some levels.

It scrolls side to side in World 2, and it's a 4-way dungeon crawler in the fortress stages. :) I especially like those labyrinths, they really show some creative design.

The design is wonderful. I like to compare it to the design in Metroid since it was done by the same person, Gunpei Yokoi. The scrolling up-n-down levels in both Metroid and Kid Icarus seem to have a common aesthetic. Kid Icarus is a hardcore game from the start, unlike Mario. With Mario everyone (girls/guys) would sit around and take turns going through the levels (we had to institute a six zone limit except for the Ãœber competitions). That could be the whole party, sitting on a couch with a rotation order, drinking beer, smoking cigarettes and the evil weed, and playing mario. With kid Icarus the girls tried it once and then cleared out, all but one who was the nerdy girl of our clique. Game didn't appeal to the chicks much. The guys were having a lot of fun and the constant dying made for some good trash talking. I guess it's the less desolate/isolating version of what Metroid is.

And exactly that´s the problem.

But thanks for your help (and celines, too!)

Is there anybody who owns Mario Kart 64 for Virtual Console and can tell me if it is still fun to him/her? Because if yes, it´ll be fun for me, too - I have so much nostalgic memories about it, I am sure I would enjoy it. Just some review sites seem to think different...

Here's some games that I'm looking forward to. If you have any others let me know.

Yeah, I read this review already and it was exactly this one that made me worry about the game.

It just doesn´t sound like it aged all too well... but thank you anyways!

If there just was somebody who owned the game on VC...
