The design is wonderful. I like to compare it to the design in Metroid since it was done by the same person, Gunpei Yokoi. The scrolling up-n-down levels in both Metroid and Kid Icarus seem to have a common aesthetic. Kid Icarus is a hardcore game from the start, unlike Mario. With Mario everyone (girls/guys) would sit around and take turns going through the levels (we had to institute a six zone limit except for the Über competitions). That could be the whole party, sitting on a couch with a rotation order, drinking beer, smoking cigarettes and the evil weed, and playing mario. With kid Icarus the girls tried it once and then cleared out, all but one who was the nerdy girl of our clique. Game didn't appeal to the chicks much. The guys were having a lot of fun and the constant dying made for some good trash talking. I guess it's the less desolate/isolating version of what Metroid is.
