Forums - Gaming Discussion - Whats happening to gaming?

The world is definately becoming more free with things that used to be taboo, unlike ssj12 I think this is a bad thing, in that, we have created a society (at least in the Americas) that is solely conserned with pleasing oneself without regard to consequences or responsibilities. Anyone who thinks that increased sex with multiple partners or wanton violence is a good thing obviously hasn't thought about the results of these things.

Teenage Pregnancy, the spread of incurable STDs, school-shootings, rape, armed robbery, and other violent crimes are directly related to the increase in instances of these acts portrayed in the media in general (not just video-games, and movies). All of these things listed above have increased dramatically in America and have done so ever since advertisers and media outlets stopped self-policing themselves and began releasing more contraversial material and IPs while standing on a podium of free-speech.

I don't believe the media to be the sole cause of the increase in unsafe and violent practices however, and before people start flaming me, it should be know that I personally don't have a problem with any of these things, nor do I object completely to questionable movies, video-games and advertisements. I do have a problem with people not talking to their children about sex, and violence in movies and monitoring what they are exposed to. By acting like it's not a problem, they run the risk of their children becoming disturbed by these images to the point where they act out, or participate in unsafe behaviors.

People are not going to change what other people do on a massive scale, but you can change the world around you by making an effort to change what you can. People in America are just too damned lazy to try, or they want to pawn off the responsibilty on someone else. Who in all likely-hood never marketed their product to Joe-Psycho-fifteen-year-old in the first place.

EDIT:

@Famousringo  I don't think sex is inherently immoral, however, many of the reasons not to have sex with multiple partners are sound advice and should be seriously considered as a reason NOT to be sexualy hyperactive. In the same vien, pornography has ruined many relationships and should be considered taboo for anyone in a relationship where devotion is expected (unless both partners enjoy it of course).

There are also many studies that show  the presence of two parents in the household is important for the stable development of children. In fact, one study done on convicts in the penal system, discovered that almost 80%  of inmates had no father figure in the home while growing up. This is a huge problem that only becomes more compounded when wholesale sex with multiple partners becomes normal; at that point no one wants to be monogomous; marriage is treated as a joke and as a final death-knell to the freedom to bang anything you want. I think that does more damage to children and creates more criminals than all the images of violence in every video-game Rockstar produces.

this all goes back to a certain game called night trap.  If anyone has actually played this game recently, they would know this kind of game would hardly be contraversial today, but back in 1992 this game sparked a huge contraversy that started the MSRB rating system.  There's no sex at all, the violence is mild, people were upset about a girl wearing a nightgown.

BTW about those atari porn games, anybody couldn't just buy them.  Also the graphics are so bad there is nothing that could possibly even turn someone on.

"What do you think is causing the increase in sexuality and violence in gaming?"

uh because people like sex and violence. dont over think it, its that simple. People like it - so it sells - so they make more of it

and uh the devil made them do it, is that what you are looking for?

"You are not our target demographic!"

In a lot of ways you could look at this as Nintendo was too good in the SNES era of producing games that appealed to a broad spectrum of gamers; developers noticed that Teens continued playing videogames even though (at the time) people considered videogames as a child's toy. Companies like Midway really started targeting the teenage boy demographics with more "Mature" versions of existing games; Mortal Kombat was an inferior version of Street Fighter 2 yet sold amazingly well because teenage boys loved that Sub-Zero could rip off an opponents head and keep the spinal collumn intact. This move into the teen market can be seen as an early version of the blue ocean strategy that Nintendo is focused on.

The success of these pioneers was soon copied by every videogame company except for Nintendo; everyone was focused on the teenage boy market. With Sony entering (and soon dominating) the market the move into teenage boys soon became the 13 to 30 year old male gamer market; soon every game had to push the boundries in order to gain attention to sell better.

In all this time no one noticed how little girls would hit 10 or 11 and stop playing games because there was nothing interesting for them, or that adults who used to play games on occasion left the market, because these companies had found a market which printed money for them.

There is very little alternative content because every successful publisher has focused on the immature male market for so long they have no interest in other markets, and don't have a clue how to make a game which is non-violent.

Umm teens and adults were playing videogames in the 80s so I doubt that it was because "Nintendo was too good in the SNES era", lol.

how true.  I think that Japanese companies are much better at this though.

18 Nintendo titles representing 59% of software sales (52% without Super Mario World) ... Certainly, this list is not complete, but I suspect that you'd see Nintendo dominating the sales in any list you could produce.

And... what does that have to do with adults playing videogames in the 1980s? If anything the rise of violent videogames had *nothing* to do with Nintendo since their games were not violent (with a few exceptions that didn't have much of an impact).  But you are right about Midway and Capcom influencing and creating such games.

I think it's primarily your first guess: The first is that, as video game graphics get better, it is easier to represent sex and vilence in games. For example, GTA was portably not possible until last gen.

This was considered as over the top violence when I was a kid. Lots of parents didn't want their kids to play it.

and not to forget the fuzz about this game ;)

And none of them is really comparable with:

Beware, I live!
I am Sinistar!
Beware, coward!
I hunger!
Roaaaaaaaaaar!

At least 62 million Wii sold by the end of 09 or my mario avatar will get sad

sex and violence r a part of life, christians just take it too seriously

I am just taking in all the benefits of the console war.
