Forums - Sony - Open Plea: Sony, please drop the PS3’s price, the industry needs it

Im not sure about this but don't PS3 slims decrease production costs?

Yes, but initially you have higher production costs, because youhave R&D costs to figure out the new design, you have to change production lines once it finalized (and production on shrinked CPU/GPUs may take 6-9month to begin working smoothly) and ofcourse another marketing push to advertise your enhanced product.

What the hell...

They won't, and they never will. Just get used to it.

Shouldn't they contact Red cross and salvation army first? :)

Sony won't drop the price of the ps3 just yet, they will when there ready, its selling just under 100k a week now which is good as its competitor isn't selling much more considering the price, Sony know what there doing, aren't they making an announcement soon? prices drop maybe slim?

lol, yes they will, and it'll be soon. Activision saw to that. We'll get a price-cut before Xmas. 50 bucks I'd wager.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.

It depends on exactly how they build it. In the current climate it wouldn't make much sense for them to release a Slim that was more expensive to produce, but theoretically they could do itif they really wanted to. It's a pretty safe bet, though, that when and if the PS3Slim materializes, it will cost less to produce than the current PS3.

That said, how much will it decrease production costs? That's harder to say. They probably won't release a Slim at all unless it at least lets them make at least a little money at the current price point: they have to stop the bleeding, and a Slim is their best chance at doing so. If they have some major breakthrough which will let them make a significant money and cut the price at the same time, then they might do that.

They might instead pocket all of the savings, keep the price where it is right now, and make even more money per unit. That wouldn't be very good PR, but Sony seems to have considered that to be a secondary concern for quite some time now. There's some grumbling over the PS3's price point, but gamers have yet to actually revolt against it, so they may try to ride the wave as long as they can and get some extra (badly needed) cash.

Complexity is not depth. Machismo is not maturity. Obsession is not dedication. Tedium is not challenge. Support gaming: support the Wii.

What do I hate about modern gaming? I hate tedium replacing challenge, complexity replacing depth, and domination replacing entertainment. I hate the outsourcing of mechanics to physics textbooks, art direction to photocopiers, and story to cheap Hollywood screenwriters. I hate the confusion of obsession with dedication, style with substance, new with gimmicky, old with obsolete, new with evolutionary, and old with time-tested.
There is much to hate about modern gaming. That is why I support the Wii.
