The Wii doesn't count. The 360 and the PS3 focuses on the same gaming userbase, while the Wii focuses on a new generation of non-gamers. The Wii doesn't count and besides it's not even HD.

I applaud the original posters ingenuity. Well done indeed. Honestly I do not think we need a years worth of numbers. Which might average everything out, and actually obscure the trend. While it might be interesting to know when this trend began. The most important thing to note is that this is the trend right now.

This seems quite intuitive. In fact it seems obvious. Microsoft has to be making up more ground on Nintendo then on Sony. Their sales are up year over year. While Nintendo has had a steeper drop then Sony. Then incidentally or not we really need to think the war as between the top two rather then the bottom two. Especially if the effect is corresponding this well. It really doesn't matter if the battle is a foregone conclusion for a protracted period. The question is where the battle is today. Not necessarily where it has been for years.

Maybe we need to be talking Nintendo/Microsoft. The reality is that Sony hasn't put up much of a fight over the last nine months. At the very least Nintendo and Microsoft are more or less total opposites. The PS3 is more or less a expensive 360 clone at this point.

Even if you go by today's numbers, it's still a decisive victory for the Wii. Saying that the 360 is up isn't really saying much because it wasn't selling that hot to begin with, and it still isn't today. The Wii is down, but it was doing so well, it had to cool off at some point.

If anything, the 360 is more or less and expensive, unprofitable PS2 clone, and a bad attempt at that. To even suggest that there's a war between itself and the Wii is ludicrous to say the least.

Consoles owned: Saturn, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, PSP, DS, PS3

Exactly. PS3's just a spectator at this point. Eventually it'll get bored and go home.

if there is a war between the two of them the wii already won.

teh cell is invincibel.

I have received 30 months of monthly data from "kowenicki" (thanks!), and the results are quite different this time, although still interesting. The correlations are as follows:

Wii - X360 : -0.55
Wii - PS3 : - 0.63
X360 - PS3 : -0.30

First of all, all the signs are negative as it should be, meaning all systems are competing with each other! In other words, any rise in any system steals from the market shares of the other systems.

Secondly, unlike the previous result, the correlations between X360 and Wii, and between PS3 and Wii are not statistically significant, which means, Wii competes with both consoles more or less the same.

The third point, which is quite interesting, is that the least of the competitions is between PS3 and X360. Their users are apparently exclusive most of the time, from which we can judge that many non-hardcore PS2 users went to Wii, while hardcore ones chose between 360 and PS3, considering their tastes, and competition didn't affect their decision much.

Last but not Least, we can see that the main competition is between the HD consoles and the wii! Those who are interested can take a look at the excel file below :
