Forums - Nintendo - Why haven't we gotten Donkey Kong 64 on the Virtual Console yet?

Originally i thought it was an issue with Expansion Pak emulation, up until Majora's Mask came out (i mean, they haven't been able to emulate any other add-on functions: Controller Pak or Rumble Pak), but now idk.

I would bet that some of DK64 was made with Rare properties, though. What was Jet-pack man, or something?

That rumble doesn't work on the VC is such BS from Nintendo. Anyone remember the Zelda Collection on GC? It had both OoT and Majora's Mask, and rumble worked in both! If they could do it on the 'cube, they could definitely do it on the Wii, atleast with the GC controller. (Of course, the classic controller has no rumble)

I can actually answer this question. The title is in the limbo of dual ownership. While Nintendo may own the license and the game in a general sense. They do not own the engine on which the game runs. The engine is a modified Banjo Kazooie engine which was the property of Rare and is now the property of Microsoft.

Remember that Rare was a second party, and not a first party. They were autonomous of Nintendo which did not own a controlling stake in the company. That is the way they wanted it, and Banjo was supposedly a big coming out for Rare being that the game was entirely theirs. From top to the very bottom. I suppose it shows a lack of forethought on the part of Nintendo to have allowed Rare to use their own proprietary engine in one of their games, or at least have negotiated a long term contract.

Regardless Nintendo does indeed own the car, but they forgot to make sure the engine was theirs as well. They could still build a new engine for the game, or they could actually negotiate with Microsoft. I am sure an agreement could be reached easily enough with both parties being happy. I just don't see Nintendo doing either for a virtual console title. When they have to do nothing for the others.

Damn. Thanks for the answer, too bad it means we probably won't see DK64 on the VC :/

Nintendo cannot make a quality DK game. They already tried after Microsoft bought Rare and failed miserably.

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat was fine, albeit a bit gimmicky. Nintendo can, they just won't.

Rare, on the other hand, can't make a quality ANYTHING game since leaving Nintendo, it seems. Well, atleast not up to the par they used to make games. Most of their games tend to end up mediocre/average these days.

@majin

Thanks for the complement. Speaking to Rares competency as a developer. While it seems obvious in all reality it is not. Rare has actually exchanged consistency of offering for what was previously erratic fluctuation. In other words while a second party for Nintendo Rare had some massively big successful titles. However they also had a fair share of abysmal bombs. Titles that were lambasted by the gaming press. Today most everyone forgets these failures, and focus on the successes.

Last year I actually compared the companies game ratings before and after Microsoft. I found only a three point difference between the 64 and the 360. The company is averaging out in the mid eighties on both platforms. The difference is that Rare is just being more consistent with what they are offering. Actually with just a couple real good games the company can pull ahead of its 64 performance.

I expect that Banjo 3 which Rare has been teasing, and perhaps a Gemini sequel may be just what the doctor called for. Platforming titles are the companies strong suit. They really just need one major hit to really redeem themselves. Of coarse a new Conker would probably get massive press.
