Forums - Nintendo - Why haven't we gotten Donkey Kong 64 on the Virtual Console yet?

I've had a blast replaying the Donkey Kong Country games over the last few weeks, but does anyone know why Donkey Kong 64 seems to be missing? It feels like they're making weird additions to the 64 library (like Cruis'n USA or whatever it was called) over classics like this one. I mean, it can't really be a dispute with Rare or something like that since Nintendo owns the DK franchise, and all 3 DKC games have been released without hassle, right?

Does anyone have any idea if Nintendo have said anything at all about Donkey Kong 64 for the Virtual Console? If not, do you have any guesses as to when it might show up, or why it hasn't yet?

“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

It could be a dispute with Rare. I really don't know. I'm just throwing ideas out there. It could be a 3D thing with Microsoft. Rare 3D games are being remade for the 360, like Banjoe-Kazooie. 2D games are on the Virtual Console. 2 + 2 = ?

I have moved and do not have the internet at home, yet.

That makes no sense, though. Virtual Console has lots of 3D games, and Rare own the rights to Banjo-Kazooie - Not to DK. Anything and everything Donkey Kong is owned 100% by Nintendo.

I'd imagine it's something to do with Rare being owned by Microsoft.

Or maybe Nintendo's just holding this one back. Smash 64 isn't out in NA yet either, is it?

My best guess is because when you get one of those 2 silver coins, you play Jetpac which IS owned by Rare (which is owned by MS). Although simple solution, just take it out.

It could be similar to Goldeneye, though with the roles reversed.  With Goldeneye, Rare has 100% rights to the game, but Nintendo owns part of the coding (or something) so Rare would have to completely recode the entire game in a different way in order to get around it.  Could be the same deal with DK, where Nintendo owns the franchise but Rare has some stake in the code.

Though I have no idea how the 2D DKC games got up there if that`s the case.

Could I trouble you for some maple syrup to go with the plate of roffles you just served up?

I don't think that's the case as I believe Activision now owns the rights to the James Bond franchise.

i'm guessing it'll be up there eventually. unlike diddy kong racing (which has charecters owned by nintendo) and banjo kazooie-tooie(owned by rare), nintendo owns the rights the the game.

they just have to realize nintendo has to release all the shitty 3rd party crap before doing something like thinking about us.

come try out the computer game i've been working on for my high school senior project, titled sling ball. http://vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=76669&page=1

you can view a few screenshots from the game in my photo album here; http://www.vgchartz.com/photos/album.php?album=2312

yes, this is vonboy's alt account. i can't log into my original account, and i'm not sure if i will ever be able to.

Originally i thought it was an issue with Expansion Pak emulation, up until Majora's Mask came out (i mean, they haven't been able to emulate any other add-on functions: Controller Pak or Rumble Pak), but now idk.

I would bet that some of DK64 was made with Rare properties, though. What was Jet-pack man, or something?
