Sony's taking steps to build a base of PlayStation 3 developers in Taiwan -- and the local government is helping, offering PS3 developers a 40 percent subsidy for licensing and development costs.

Sony will bring in Japanese and Western PS3 developers to offer guidance and tech support to Taiwanese software developers learning to develop PS3 games, according to a Nikkei report. The company will also sponsor lectures at Taiwan's Tatung University, a private technology institute connected to consumer tech manufacturer Tatung Company.

Eventually, Sony hopes to establish a strong Taiwanese development community that can create PS3 games for mainland China -- where the large majority of the gaming audience has primarily been PC and online players.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs' plans to support Sony in creating a PS3 development community in Taiwan were recently announced at a joint press conference.

Wow, Sony struck a pretty good deal here, with the government subsidizing 40% of the development and licensing fees.

I wonder if Sony will move any studio's or open any first party studio's in Taiwan.

lol, i was thinking the same thing.

very interesting deal but from the tone of the article it sounds mostly like this is targeted to the chinese market. since i'm not chinese i'm inclined not to care too much.

oh phew, I thought my pizza was spiked. I saw the story and saw Gebx posted it, I expected it to be negative but it's actually positive, I'm shocked!! Nice post.

Didn't a canadian City gave money to UbiSoft to fund a studio there? creating 800 jobs or so?
