Forums - Sales - Xbox 360 & PS3 Software Sales Comparisons

Good list. I would add the attach rate for each console as well. I think both unit sales and the attach rate are good indicators of a title's success by platform. I am glad you had the guts to post this one.

I am scratching my head over the Dead Space numbers, some of my friends claim it is one of the best games this generation. I think I will have to pick it up.

Attach rates vurses hard retail copies?......Really?

PS3 is pretty good at selling fighting, racing, football and shooter games. In all other genres it quite horribly fails, especially compared to 360 and Wii.

You're forgetting about action/sandbox. And adventure games. And music games (although less than other consoles). And Football games (I wasn't sure if you were talking about Soccer or American Football, I'm referring to the American version).

So unless you're going to include every genre, don't make statements like that.

One thing I'd like to point out, is this also extends to the top selling "exclusive" titles on each console. Now, while I would wager that the total amount of exclusive games sold is rather equivalent to the userbase difference, or even in the favor of the PS3, the very top comparable exclusives(or in the 360's case, multiplatform games shared with the PC) vastly lean towards Xbox 360 dominance. With 10 million sellers like halo 3, and huge franchises like Gears and even Fable, the top selling 360 "exclusives" are vastly outselling the equivalent "AAA" exclusives on the Sony consoles, despite splitting sales with the PC.

Sony could do some catching up with GT5 though, but this gen, I doubt Sony will ever catch up with MS in raw software sales, even if they double them in hardware. The 360 is a beast.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

He's making that statement referring to the chart, and if you break down the numbers his basically right on all except the shooters.. unless he's referring to Sandbox shooters...

Yes well 360 is a huge software giant this generation, good for Microsoft knowing the 360 fanbase is strong.

It's too bad other games below 85 aren't there. Usually when a PS3 game outsells a 360 game the numbers are pretty close but the opposite can be pretty lopsided like the following:

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock: 4.24M (360) 1.88M (PS3)
Guitar Hero: World Tour: 2.01M (360) 1.22M(PS3)
Madden NFL 09: 2.31M (360) 1.60M(PS3)
Assassin's Creed: 4.51M (360) 3.39M(PS3)

Are there any multi-platform games in which the PS3 version outsold the 360 version by over a million?

Edit: Found one... PES 2009.  Strange that this year's version dropped so much on the 360 and gained so much on the PS3, is it due to Fifa 09?

Nice additional chart. I don't know if you can really credit some stats. Even being a x360 guy i know that the rock bad and bioshock numbers are skewed

Thank you Kowenicki

PS3 will need to outsell 360 by:

444,931 per month to catch it by Jan 2011. 102,676 per week.
266,958 per month to catch it by Jan 2012. 61,606 per week.
190,685 per month to catch it by Jan 2013. 44,004 per week.
148,310 per month to catch it by Jan 2014. 34,225 per week.

Current rate is:  -18,262 per month
Avge over last 6 mths
Negative number means 360 is outselling PS3 by that amount per mth on avge

There is alot of data missnig for some of the ps3 games you listed.. Oblivion for instance doesnt have any European data, same with Rockband.

mM

^^^ I apologize for the mistake. I assumed that VGChartz would include all of the other numbers.

And games like Halo were just like that on the original Xbox vs the PS2. The only exclusive games to ever break 8 million on the PS2 were GTA, GT, and Final Fantasy. So don't try and make it seem like since Halo 3 sold 10 million, the 360 is the end all, be all for software sales
