Forums - Sales - Is the Sony marketing machine (of games) broken...

Marketing can't have much to do with the low sales sinse I've seen A LOT of KZ2, Resistance 2 and I'm still constantly seeing Infamous commercials.

Resistance 2 is better then Killzone 2 so why are you shitting on it again?

"inFamous needs to pick up or could see sales of less than 1m" So is 490k is about 4 weeks not good enough for you? It is currently tracking above our old friend Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

And top multiplats tend to sell better on PS3 in terms of percentages, especially those focused outside America, such as Pro Evo, FIFA, Resident Evil, also look at Asssassin's Creed, much better sales comparatively on PS3, and of course the big one, GTA IV, much higher attach rate

I do agree that they need more huge sellers, but the whole more diverse demographic stuff is right. If you look at the sales of shooters on the 2 consoles, compared to other genres, the Xbox does much better in comparison, and then you look at the two biggest franchises on the Xbox, and they are both shooters. 5 of the top 6 selling Xbox games are FPSs (inc GeoW), and the other one is GTA IV.

what?  where am i shitting on anything...  dont be so sensitive.

Why don't you look at your Avatar if you want to talk about exclusives that don't sell.

This isnt a bashing contest, if it was you'd lose so dont even go there.

I am not slagging games off.. I am wondering why sony cant seem to promote what are very good games.

I would lose? I cannot lose I own all 3 consoles this gen feel free to bow.

As for the answer to your question it's quite obvious is it not? Halo 3 for example MS spent 50 milliion on advertising alone.

More Money= More ads I thought this was a simple concept.

So what is it then?

This is my theory for why PS3 usually has low game sales compared to X360 for example.

First things first, the X360 is bought for one thing only, games. The PS3 is bought for many things, games, blu-ray, the cell etc. When the PS3 was first released a good bit of the sales were from people wanting to get the cheapest and best Blu-ray player (sinse at the time Blu-ray players cost up to $1500), this isn't really the case anymore sinse Blu-ray players can be much more cheaper then the PS3. Also many different companies bought a lot of PS3's because of the cell, the PS3 is basically the cheapest super computer your going to find.

Now that could be a good bit of people that bought the PS3 to not play games but to do other things. But that was then this is now. The PS3 is basically marketed as a gaming machine (finally) now, a couple years ago it was marketed to be a multimedia machine, and games didn't seemed to be not that important to the PS3 a couple years ago (mostly because Sony was trying to win the HD war with HD-DVD so they marketed the PS3 as a Blu-ray player more then a gaming machine, not the case anymore).

But none of that is the case now. The PS3's main function to Sony now is games.

Sony's marketing for the PS3 and its games in Europe is horrible !

Even the PSP gets more love

I will concede that it is possible that the marketing team for PS3 and it's games must be smoking crack. With the exception of inFamous which has great ads. Even if it "only" sells 1.5-2 million the word is on the street now that PS3 has another dope exclusive. That's the momentum Sony needs to keep up.

So what you are saying is that the gaming install base of the PS3 is lower than it appears? as it is skewed by many PS3 consoles purchased not being used for games at all or very little?

Yes, I believed that the 22.82 million PS3 owners don't play games regularly or at all, unlike the 30.82 million X360 owners that I believe all play game regularly. Like I said though that isn't the case now, this is just from when the PS3 was first released, now when people buy a PS3 it's for games.

You post what can be considered a flamebait type article and then accuse posters of being too sensitive:>  That's nice.

On topic, you are essentially talking about new IP.  Resistance, LBP, Uncharted, inFamous are all new current generation properties that have sold very well.  Existing exclusive franchises have sold very well including GT5P(3 million) and MGS4(4 million).  Killzone 2 has underperformed, but as someone said earlier it is the sequel to a mediocre game.  I think you should consider how new IP has worked on the 360 and use that in your comparison, aside from Gears are there any other standouts?

By the way, you have a mental problem if you think it is unlikely that inFamous breaks a million.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.
