Forums - Sony - Are Sony's non gaming projects for PS3 really worth it for the extra sales?

I don't really use any of the mentioned services, but you can't really fault Sony's first party effort. I am very happy with the quantity and quality of Sony's first party titles.

Thanks for the input, Jeff.

I believe Sony has spent lot of money and much much more precious resources on lots of non-gaming related projects for PS3

like

- Home

- VidZone

- Folding for PS3

- Now working on Cloud

- than on smaller scale browsers and media players & codecs.

I believe that if these resources were spent on game development than Sony could easily have launched 2 exclusive games which could have given a better return for the Sony and also would have given boast to the sales of the PS3. after all at the end of the day the most important factor for anyone to be convinced to buy a PS3 is the games and only games.

Wot do u think? do u believe having these entertainment services also played role in ur decission to buy a PS3?

What about the PSPhallus Wand? Is that really worth it for Sony?

Firstly, Home is generating Sony a lot of revenue, ads, clothing, spaces, etc, etc. Folding at home costed Sony about 5 bucks, all you do is donate. Vidzone is great and will push casual music lovers in Europe to purchase a PS3. If I was Sony I would stop fooling around and sign contracts with Twitter, Facebook, AIM, Blockbuster.

maybe blockbuster but for other services i don't think PS3 is a preferred choice.. u can use a nettop or even palm will be more easy for these services.. that is wot i m saying. PS3 can never become ideal for these services. :)

Why cant the PS3 be ideal, but the 360 is?  Since it is getting some of those features

I didn't say that X360 is ideal.. the problem is that by launching X360 earlier, MS has already have a bigger library for X360.. so Sony first need to match X360 in game library department before matching the other features of X360.. this is just my point of view.

Sony wants to attract casual players as well, these things are perfectly in line with that. Yes, they're probably good for Sony once the price falls to a certain point. Right now they're not too much use, though, but they're still not bad. Besides, it's less and less about games than in the beginning: as long as they don't get significantly less AAA exclusives than 360 does, they're doing pretty much fine.

I don't use Home but there are games on it and it does make Sony money. Folding at Home helps people. The browser is a good thing and helped me out when my pc was down. So I think they aren't wasting resouces especially when you realize how many first party games they put out.

Go Team Venture! I still don't get the Wii, PS Move,  and Kinect.

Well i was just saying that how can you say that the PS3 cant be ideal when its competitor is getting some of those features.   Of course the PS3 is ideal.   We arent talking about games library here,  MS didnt add these features as a substitute for games, they added them to enhance the entire Xbox Experience and to go with the games already released.   Thats what Sony needs to do as well,  broaden and enhance the experience on the PSN.  The games will be there regardless,  its not like Santa Monica studios is going to stop production GOWIII to work on a Facebook or a Twitter app. Sony will bring in people specifically for those projects just like they did with Home

Ok what the hell is cloud? For the other features I use them alot except for vidzone it aint in usa yet.

" Profit Not Driving Force For Home" - Sony
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/profit-not-driving-force-for-home-right-now

PlayStation Home's focus is firmly on producing content and growing its community, with chasing profit coming further down the list.

Doesn't sound like Sony is making any profit from Home.

More revenue and more content advertising means higher profits in the future. So in a business prospective profit needs to take a back set to making it possible to make a profit.

Sony don't need to match the 360 in game library.  When you think about it Sony as the biggest library of games when you count PSN, PS1, PS2, and PSP games.  There are plenty of games I still haven't played that I want to play from all PS consoles.  There is over 500 PS3 games which includes exclusives and  multiplats and that's plenty of games to me.  360 have about 130 more games and like you said it's because it be out early.
