Forums - Nintendo - Malstrom explains how he would make his own 2d Mario game

nordlead said:
I don't think he understands how difficult it is to make a 2D level. Sure, anyone can whip something together, but to actually make it good? a lot of play testing goes into every level released. Also, he must have no experience with random level generators, because sure, they may work, but the levels always suck compared to real human made levels. As he pointed out, the challenge is in making so many levels. He is talking 1000's to actually make the game interesting. Sure, a lot of them would be variants of the original level, but that is still a lot of levels to work on.

Case and point, Infinite Super Mario Bros.. Sure, there's infinte levels, but they're all really boring. Anyone who's played it will know what I'm talking about.

"Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand - you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don’t succeed, you’ll blame yourself rather than the game. Moreover, the people standing around watching the game have also got to be able to enjoy it." - Shiggy

would be an amazing game.

random map generating sounds awful (really, a lot of work and testing has to be done to make a good level even if it's 2D), but the rest of his ideas are quite good

This article reminds me of the time I used 'Lunar Magic' to edit levels in a Super Mario World rom. If anyone heres done it you'll agree with me when I say its good fun but extremely hard to get things working perfectly.

Edit: Heres some images if anyone wants proof http://fusoya.eludevisibility.org/lm/shots.html

Pacman taught people to run around in dark rooms munching on pills while listening to repettive techno music and for that I somewhat idolise him.

Malstrom may be a smart guy, but he isn't exactly Warren Spector or Miyamoto when it comes to game design.

The random weather thing and level creation/sharing are his best ideas on there, and albeit good, they've been in several games already. The others either demand really heavy developer support ("handmade" new powerups and stages) or will end up being boring and VERY repetitive (aforementioned things generated randomly => a million differently colored Super Mushrooms). The idea about enemies retaking the stages actually requires you to stop playing the game for a lengthy period of time, which seems like a completely ass-backward approach to me.

Try again, Atlas.

I have to give him credit for an interesting idea, but my gut reaction is that I would not like that game.

And that's ignoring all the technical issues that have already been brought up in the thread.

haha everything that has been said by Nintendo fanboys about User Generated Content like Little Big Planet can be said here.
Mario/Nintendo=quality control.

Not to mention download times for all those levels. After one year your startup would be ridiculous in order to download even 10 levels of UGC.
weather effects?

Time effects are the best idea, but would require a lot of content to be generated that most gamers will never get to see.

A better idea is a super smash brothers version of mario, which they already fucked up with the new super mario game. Could've played with the speed of pikachu or the firepower of bowser. Instead they just reskinned everything.

Ever heard of term: Great idea, bad execution!
Anyone?

I don't think you would download them. They would already be there.

It's an interesting idea, though the feasibility is a bit tough. The changes to the stage would have to be minor, and be built in to the stages from the beginning, kind of like how there was a past/present/future system in Sonic CD, which they acheived a full 16 years ago

Sonic CD is a good example.  Another is Wario land - SML 3 for gameboy.  After you would clear a stage, the levels would change a little bit.  Like in the first world, rice beach, once you cleared the world, when you came back, the tide would be a lot higher, so half the levels which had no water in them before were half underwater, allowing you to reach different secret areas.

Something to that degree i could see being feasible, but if your actions had more control over the effects, it would be pretty cool.
