ME2, while the "smallest" title Bioware is developing, is still larger than most other projects in the industry.
The last Star Wars MMO flopped badly.
Dragon Age is a new IP, and its sales aren't guarnteed. ME2 is guarnteed to sell well. MMOs are very risky, because they are expensive to maintain, and require a large community to fund that maintenance. Plus, SCII, and Diablo III are coming out soon afterwards.
I think Dragon Age will be great, and so will ME2. I think KoToR:MMO will suck because it's a MMO that's not WoW. MMO is a dead genre to me. I have no wish to ever play another one. Been there, done that. I have over 200 days in my WoW toons. I've played the best, and beat it.
ME2, could, potentially, end up being the biggest, best, and most profitable game for Bioware ever, for all we know. Let's not jump to conclusions. Especially after the epic showing at E3. I mean...Dragon Age didn't win many awards, did it? |
Star Wars Galaxies didn't flop and it still is making money, though Sony's mistakes definitely took away alot of the game's potential.
MMOs have as much risk as anywhere else, doesn't matter that much. the thing is that those who have a solid appeal will instantly get decent userbase size in it's launch. The new SW MMO has that. Hell, even if Bioware messes up the launch they can still recover, like Funcom did with Age of Conan.
MMO market is increasing rapidly. Non-WoW subcriptions MMOs increased 30% last year, and F2P MMOs are growing even more than that.
MMOs aside, I don't see how Mass Effect will sell as much as Dragon Age. There's just too much going for Dragon Age. And E3 awards are meaningless, they don't even reward the game itself but it's presentation/demos, and what matters is the full product. For example, Mass Effect 1 won ALOT of E3 awards, yet it won nowhere near the amount of RPG GOTY awards that The Witcher did in 2007.
