Forums - Gaming - Is Mass Effect 2 Bioware's smallest project in development?

Bioware has in development 3 publicly known RPGs and it got me wondering where their priority lied if Bioware were forced to shut down one of the RPGs. Then I started to think which of those 3 projects had the least potential in profitability - I set my eyes on Mass Effect due to various factors:

Comparing ME2 to Dragon Age:
1- It is only being released on 2 platforms, while Dragon Age will be out on 3.
2- It will only come out on PC some time after the X360 is out.
3- It is much less likely to make a killing on expansions than Dragon Age.
4- Dragon Age is being hailed as the spiritual successor of the best RPG ever.

Comparing ME2 to Star Wars: The Old Republic:
1- Has a much higher budget than Star Wars MMO.
2- Doesn't have the brand pull that Star Wars has.
3- The F2P Market is booming.
4- Won't have anywhere near the longevity that the typical MMO has.

Thoughts? And please none of that typical "ur wrong lawl" responses with no argument value.

Using the reasons you gave, i would say its there least valuable...

Although, ME2 will probably get the best review scores.

ME 2 will have a 360PC simultaneous release. You have to look at development times, new tech going into it and more.... anyway, they are also working on another game

Well, I'm excited about DragonAge and ME2. A couple of things.

ME2, while the "smallest" title Bioware is developing, is still larger than most other projects in the industry.

The last Star Wars MMO flopped badly.

Dragon Age is a new IP, and its sales aren't guarnteed. ME2 is guarnteed to sell well. MMOs are very risky, because they are expensive to maintain, and require a large community to fund that maintenance. Plus, SCII, and Diablo III are coming out soon afterwards.

I think Dragon Age will be great, and so will ME2. I think KoToR:MMO will suck because it's a MMO that's not WoW. MMO is a dead genre to me. I have no wish to ever play another one. Been there, done that. I have over 200 days in my WoW toons. I've played the best, and beat it.

ME2, could, potentially, end up being the biggest, best, and most profitable game for Bioware ever, for all we know. Let's not jump to conclusions. Especially after the epic showing at E3. I mean...Dragon Age didn't win many awards, did it?

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I am totally bummed about the next KOTOR being an MMO, but come on - Bioware is not SOE (those fuckheads).

ME2 would probably have the wonderful combination of lower cost (reused assets) and probably is the most likely of the three to turn a profit since its not a new I.P. or an expensive MMO.

Tease.

Star Wars Galaxies didn't flop and it still is making money, though Sony's mistakes definitely took away alot of the game's potential.

MMOs have as much risk as anywhere else, doesn't matter that much. the thing is that those who have a solid appeal will instantly get decent userbase size in it's launch. The new SW MMO has that. Hell, even if Bioware messes up the launch they can still recover, like Funcom did with Age of Conan.

MMO market is increasing rapidly. Non-WoW subcriptions MMOs increased 30% last year, and F2P MMOs are growing even more than that.

MMOs aside, I don't see how Mass Effect will sell as much as Dragon Age. There's just too much going for Dragon Age. And E3 awards are meaningless, they don't even reward the game itself but it's presentation/demos, and what matters is the full product. For example, Mass Effect 1 won ALOT of E3 awards, yet it won nowhere near the amount of RPG GOTY awards that The Witcher did in 2007.

His implication was that with the Star Wars IP attached, it had a much higher chance of success, compared to the Mass Effect name. I say that the Star Wars name has been tarnished forever in the MMO realm.

ME 1 suffered a lot from releasing on the Xbox 360, and having terrible technical glitches. Were it released on PC initially and the 360 later, it would have won many, many awards. The PC version is fantastic.

I am looking forward far more to Dragon Age personally than ME2, but it's very apparent that ME2 will sell more and is far more hyped.

Dragon Age will sell well but has 0 chance against ME2 in sales.
