Forums - Gaming - Why is Pokemons the ONLY JRPG where Grinding is Fun/Acceptable?

I've had a fun time with it in the past, but only in certain conditions.

It has to have just the right amount of challenge, and good variety of pokemon.

Plus, with a lot of grinding, you increase your chances of finding a shiny (which people will trade anything for, apparently)

What's grinding?

Grinding is pretty much a term in which it means you kill a lot of weaker enemies so you can have an easier time on either the next boss or the stronger enemies. There's other reasons to grind though sometimes.

Grinding is easy in Pokemon. Just find a Lucky Egg from a wild Chansey, let your Pokemon hold it, then battle Happiny/Chansey/Blissey, they give the best EXP. If only Diamond and Pearl had secret bases. Then you could have a battle with 6 Happiny/Chansey/Blissey every day for the best EXP.

Pixel Art can be fun.

On another note, the only downside to grinding in Pokemon, in my opinion, is PP is limited so you can only use Flamethrower, Zen Headbutt, Earthquake, etc. so many times.

I once spent 14 hours in a single battle in FFT, I don't mind grind - in fact it can be fun.

I like it in games like pokemon but not in full 3D RPGs (like final fantasy - the main series) I remember I used to affix a rubber band to my PlayStation controller for Final Fantasy 8 and 9 in such a way that the right analog stick was held over to the right and the X button was pressed - this caused the character to run in circles in the overworld and when a battle insued they would automatically attack over and over and over (so I could leave for several hours and not have to grind - kinda like autogrind), I guess i'm weird

PS despite the grind in FFVIII it is still my favorite Final Fantasy (in the main series)

Currently dreaming of: DKC4 or Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (classic 2D platformers) for WiiWare, Smash Bros. for DSi, New Super Mario World for DSi, a Wii remake or true sequel of Final Fantasy Tactics.

One down, hopefully more awesomeness to come.

That's why you stay relatively close to a Pokemon Center. Free PP Restoration.

That's how i made the big long pre-Elite 4 grind tolerable, just hang out in the upper level of Victory Road and periodically return to the Pokemon Center

I used a similar technique in DQVIII to make time pass for the alchemy pot :)

It's all about the game.

More or less, that's what I did.

Especially necessary in Ruby/Sapphire.
