I doubt it will do that kind of numbers. I don't think nintendo has the supply for that many.
I am going to predict that around 13 million motion plus will be sold.

The people who continue to play wii sports aren't sitting there like "man, I wish this game had a little stronger controls!" I think WM+ will do well, especially with all the bundles out there for it. However, I don't think it will jump so quickly. |
Does it matter what they think of the controls? I think most people are going to see that it is a sequel to Wii Sports and want to buy it.

Well, I've bought two... So... They're getting there. Slowly.
Numbers sound possible. The price is a bit of a rip off though and that combined with possible supply constraints are what could prevent it getting to your prediction. It's very immoral that for a full extra controller I have to pay £30 for wii remote, £15 for nunchuck, £20 for wii motion plus for a grand total of £65.

I could be wrong but I suspect that Nintendo priced the Wii MotionPlus at a point where people would see value in the game bundles, but not so high that people wouldn't buy 1 or 2 to complete their set.
I think you're making the incorrect assumption that WSR will have the same appeal as Wii Fit. 10 million is likely, but 17 million...I don't think so.
Most people who get into WM+ games will want to have multiple units.
For example, I just bought Tiger Woods 10 and have WSR pre-ordered. I might buy a third WM+ since there are three of us in the house. And I am just 1 of 50M.

I think it's possible, but largely due to bundles outside of WSR. I mean it comes with Tiger Woods, Grand Slam Tennis, WSR, and Red Steel 2 that we know of. The combined total of all four of these games sold could very well be 20 million or above. It's a tough pill to swallow, but it is possible.
Tiger is gauranteed to sell bare minimum over 1 million (08 and 09 both cleared a million easy on wii), and with all the talk could quite possibly clear two million. Anecdotally, alot of people that don't normall buy golf games are buying Tiger Woods 10, so it will likely do better than the last two. Grand Slam Tennis will probably hit a million (Every tennis game on wii has only sold 700-800k, but this has considerably more hype than any other which should be good for at least another 200k I would think). Red Steel 2 is actually getting attention now, and is the first "core" game to use wii motion+ and will probably get more attention that your average wii FPS. I think it has a good shot at clearing a million if it comes out this holiday season.
That leaves WSR to have to sell around 15-16 million. That's a very hard pill to swallow, but on the other hand it is the sequel to the single most iconic game of this generation. I think the sales of this game are going to be a surprise. They will either blow us all away, or sell way less than we expect.
As for actual adoption rate, even if it clears 20 million this year it has to be considered how many of those are in the same household. I will probably buy both tiger woods and wsr and probably red steel 2 (hopefully unbundled, I doubt I will need more than 2 WM+). How many of the 20 million will be in the same house?
It will be interesting to see how well people adapt to this new subtle upgrade. It's not a big board after all, it's a tiny little cube. Will it click with the average wii consumer that this is an important product? Interesting stuff indeed.

That's exactly what I'm thinking.
On topic: 20 million is quite ambitious. Anything more than 10 mil this year for WSR would be a success plus a couple millions from other bundles. I think there is a good chance for 12 millions before the end of the year.
MikeB predicts that the PS3 will sell about 140 million units by the end of 2016 and triple the amount of 360s in the long run.
