Forums - Sales - Suqare0Enix is VERY Disappointed in SALES of Chrono Trigger DS!

I don't know if I ever wan't a third Chrono game.
If it would happen, then for me to be interested at all, they need Mitsuda as music composer and SE would have to bring back a lot of the original staff who is currently working at Monolith Soft.

Be disappointed in CT's sales because we all know how amazing Infinite Undiscovery, The Last Remnant, and Star Ocean did.

Then maybe they shouldn't have ported a 15-year old game and expected it to sell over a million. Seriously, this is ridiculous. Square are so full of themselves.

Final Fantasy III, if you're using the NES version, is nearly 20 years old. And it sold over 2 million copies on the DS. Bad excuse much?

...You mean the game that was never released in the West until its DS version, hadn't been re-released in Japan in decades, and was the first "holy shit look at that" Final Fantasy remake on the most popular handheld in the history of the world?

And you think that's a proper comparison to Chrono Trigger, whose most diehard fans either own a copy from its previous two releases (one of which is very easy to find, albeit crappy) or just have it on an emulator, and in either case may not be willing to pay the Square Tax?

That is not a good comparison.

I think Chrono Trigger is a lot more popular on the internet, than it is with the average gamer. Many DS owners weren't around when CT was released originally, and they don't want to play on SNES graphics, with a game that basically has a very minimalist story until about 20 hours into the game.

Honestly, I like Secret of Mana a lot better than CT, and I think VI destroys both games.

I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

When FF VI and CT cross blades, both blades break. That is the law of nature, Zen ;)

I like SoM, but I like CT and FF VI better.

I bought it and was disappointed. Then I passed it on to someone more likely to enjoy it, he started it but couldn't tolerate the graphics.

A game I'm developing with some friends:

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

Boo, CT on the DS is beautiful... if you like 2d, that is. And I do.

@montana

but thats Final Fantasy + it was "properly" remade also FF is much more popular now

Well, the original Chrono Trigger outsold the original FF3 on the NES (although it sold less than the SNES version). A proper remake didn't seem to stop hype for the game or the high reviews, so I don't see that being much of a problem. I'd agree that the FF series is far more popular now, but judging by Square's expectations, they expected more from Chrono Trigger.

you also have to understand that FF3 was never at the states in the first place and a lot of people wanted to play it for the first time.

You guys. It was meant to sell so much that they would make back the millions that FFXIII and FFvXIII has swallowed during their decade long development times. Unfortunately to do that it would probably have had to sold 50% more than the original did. It doesn't matter that the U.S audience expanded compared to the Snes version, or that in half a year it sold almost half of what the original did despite being a slightly enhanced port.

First, this is really retarded to say they are disappointed with those sales.

I think the RPG market on the DS is heavily saturated however, and especially the SNES-remaky one. I mean, you can literally get about every major SNES RPG remade for the DS or atleast for the GBA which you can play with your DS too. Additionally, there's also a lot of completely new RPG's (which usually sell worse than the remakes).

The problem with this is that I just don't see the avarage gamer playing more than 3 RPG's a year, yet alone about six as you had to if you wanted to keep up with the DS's library.

So if Square Enix wanted to get the maximum out of its franchises, they should probably concentrate on making only one RPG per platform/year instead of remaking FF, Dragon Quest, Chrono Trigger and also releasing new games all in the same time.
But I guess they aren't that unhappy with just milking everything they once created to death, so they shouldn't complain about sales either.
