So does that mean if we buy loads and loads of copies of FF VII on the PS Store, they will properly remake it, because the graphics do suck

Well, the original Chrono Trigger outsold the original FF3 on the NES (although it sold less than the SNES version). A proper remake didn't seem to stop hype for the game or the high reviews, so I don't see that being much of a problem. I'd agree that the FF series is far more popular now, but judging by Square's expectations, they expected more from Chrono Trigger.
I wonder if this means that Square-Enix has learned the hard lesson that most businesses do not: that what the most vocal customers request isn't necessarily what the majority of the customers will appreciate. Figuring out what to make involves a bit more than just asking people what they want, because you'll just get the same answers every time: more of the same and better than before. And really, just giving people exactly what they ask for is exactly the wrong thing to do in business, because there's no surprise or excitement in that. The smart move is to look at people's buying and use habits, figure out what you've done right and what you've done wrong, and then making something that simultaneously shores up your past weaknesses and gives the players a new and valued experience.
Or you can be first out the door and start the latest craze, but really, that only helped them once when FF7 started the "FMV-driven RPG" craze of the mid-90s.
Sky Render - Sanity is for the weak.

I didn't buy Chrono Trigger DS out of fear that it would taint my memories of that awesome game. I jumped at Chrono Cross (and was let down) and I would go gaga over a new Chrono Trigger game. It's Square's money to make or lose, though.
wow a ds port of a ps port of a snes game didnt sell billions. go figure square.

Final Fantasy III, if you're using the NES version, is nearly 20 years old. And it sold over 2 million copies on the DS. Bad excuse much? |
FFIII was 3D remake of a game that was never released in the west. Chrono Trigger DS was the third version of the game released. Not only that it was a port that lacked the complete overhaul given to FFIII and later FFIV on DS.

Chrono Trigger is one of my all time favorite games, and I still didn't buy the DS game. Know why? They are charging 40 dollars for it with almost nothing new in the game to show for it. Chrono Trigger is a beloved game, but their handling of it was lazy. Why should I buy it again for such a high price?
Final Fantasy III and IV they both completely remade, added super slick cut scenes, voice acting, entirely new graphics, and re-written scripts. Chrono Trigger had an uncensored script, a bunch of added (largely unnecessary) options, the same cutscenes that were in the PSX version, and a lame monster rancher multiplayer mode....for 40 bucks. Even as a diehard chrono trigger fan, I couldn't justify that purchase.
People adore Chrono Trigger but that doesn't mean they are going to donate 40 dollars to the "please make another one someday hopefully" fund by purchasing almost the exact same game over again. And people that don't know Chrono Trigger see an SNES game for 40 bucks, next to a bunch of much more modern looking RPGs. And yet it's still coming close to selling a million.

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

Well, Chrono Trigger is a full priced DS game that I think most people would have preferred to pay 8$ on the VC. FF3 is a complete 3D remake with voice acting of a game never released in the West. That's not a very good comparison.
How many cups of darkness have I drank over the years? Even I don't know...

THIS, SE had me on board with FF4 in an instant. I considered buying CT again (i sold it long ago) on DS when it came out i was in Japan, but I decided to go with the SNES version since it was 800 yen and the DS version was 4000 yen with barely anything new.
currently playing: Skyward Sword, Mario Sunshine, Xenoblade Chronicles X
Well it was basically the exact same game with like a map feature right? That's not enough for me to rebuy it. Although Chrono Trigger is EPIC.
