A sister site "DVD CHARTS" may work though ... check AMAZON and DVDEMPIRE. BD is outselling HDDVD 3:1 at the moment. tht margin would be increasing to 10:1 by teh end of 2007. Reatilers finally pull out the plug off HD-DVD in 2008
Those aren't hardware numbers, they're movies sold. Also somethings wrong with BR backers... Toshiba releases a HD DVD laptop, Disney isn't releasing any new BR's and same with Fox. For Example, Borat one of the big blockbusters of last year will not come out on Blu Ray...?? Blu Ray backers seem to be scared...

CASINO ROYALE earned 600 million dollars in revenues compared to just 257 m for BORAT. http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=jamesbond21.htm http://www.boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=borat.htm in terms of hardware last month 20 k standalone 1000$ BD players were bought against 13k 500$ HD-DVD players. Blue Ray has exclusive rights to over 80% of hollywood movies. at CES except Universal no one announced anything for HD-DVD. Blue Ray had a clean sweep at CES. Aus retailers has already bade good bye to HD-DVD http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=120 The biggest film of 2007 Spiderman 3 would be exclusively available to BLue Ray only. NOTE: _ Over 50% of ps3 owners own a single /multiple BD movies. In JAPAN BD enjoys a 95% adoption rate too. BD wins hands down.

First of all software numbers are the point and on march 20th ,Finding Neverland (Buena Vista), Chicken Little (Buena Vista), Eragon (Fox) are being released on blu ray. If it wasn't for the delay I would have picked up Mr. & Ms. Smith alongside casino royal. If this is a spin attempt, it is weak and has no merit. HD-DVD is suffering badly. If this rate keeps up Blu ray may become the defacto standard for HD soon.

BR only started outselling HD DVD since January 1st 2007. Saying that they're "suffering badly" is little over reactive. Has the BR camp gotten a huge boost from the PS3... yes 100%. Oh and just because Sony's marketing machine says the format war is over doesn't mean it actually is.

That is the point. Ever noticed that there were not any real BR advertisements until after the PS3 was released. Then people said that most PS3 users will not buy blu ray. That was proven false because the next report was that an average 6 or more BR movies were purchased by PS3 owners. Ever since launch the ratio of blu ray to hd vdv movies has been higher for blu ray. In less than three months the year lead that HD-DVD had was erased and now blu ray outsells hd-dvd. This isn't just a short spurt nor a temporary achievment because not only has blu ray outsold dvd the ratio has climbed instead of dropped. The strongest signs are the release schedules HD-DVD: http://hddvd.highdefdigest.com/releasedates.html Blu Ray: http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/releasedates.html Call it hype but I will call it a reality. No Fox and disney aren't backing down. Sales for blu ray top HD-DVD 3 to 1. The release list is nearly 2 to 3 times larger for blu ray and is backed by every motion picture studio in hollywood except for 2. Please tell me how you can see this is a good thing for HD-DVD.

http://slate.msn.com/id/2125170/fr/rss/ Aug. 26, 2005 Yet in the midst of the misery comes a ray of hope: Sony's half-dollar-sized Universal Media Disc, which can be used to play movies on the company's PlayStation Portable. To the surprise of tech pundits everywhere, UMD movies have been selling splendidly since the first discs came out in April—American consumers have purchased more than 500,000 so far, according to one industry estimate. The DVD, by comparison, took a full year to ship half a million units in the United States after its 1997 debut. There's not yet a formal list of UMD best-sellers, but the current chart-topper at Amazon is Sin City. How did Robert Rodriguez's* ultra-violent comic-book adaptation become this week's UMD king?
http://www.pspworld.com/sony-psp/umd-movies/umd-sales-strong-sony-to-boost-production-001384.php Aug 31, 2005 At the Entertainment Media Expo in Hollywood, Sony executives touted the success of their UMD format. The company said it has already sold 9 million games on UMD and 8.2 million movies. Sony is currently producing 200,000 UMDs a day and future capacity is expected to be 500,000 per day. Sony expects videos to account for more than 60 percent of all UMD sales in the a few years, with an expected 130 million UMDs being sold in 2008.
http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117938320.html?categoryid=18&cs=1&s=h&p=0 Aug 31, 2005 Sony's PlayStation Portable isn't turning out to be the hot new movie platform many in the biz had hoped. With sales falling below expectations, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Paramount Home Entertainment and Warner Home Video are cutting back on movie releases for the PSP.
http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=74916 07/19/2006 "[UMD movies] have been discontinued and aren't available at any of our stores," the e-mail reads. This comes as final proof that the company has discontinued its UMD movie selection in its brick and mortar stores, though the company still lists a sizable selection on its web site. It's unknown if the company will stop selling UMD movies online, as well.
Many (MANY) formats have been created and few survive to become accepted in the mass market ... For years Laserdisc provided a much clearer (higher definition) image and had much better sound but people stuck with the inferior VHS format ... Regardless of who wins this format war, they will still have an uphill battle to prove to people that they need this format

Who cares who wins the next video format? Do we as consumers get anything out of it either way. BD vs HDDVD pricing - HDDVD is a little cheaper quality = 1080p is 1080p is there anything else to compare?...nope. DVD to ^^ pricing DVD is significantly cheaper for both movies and especially hardware. quality - DVD is not 1080p, but a good upgradable DVD player using HDMI looks fantastic already soo.... is it worth the 8x the cost for a player and 1.5x the cost for a movie...not in my book. Unless you already own one of the two format's players it really doesn't make a difference which wins. I definately am not buying one until their prices come down to sub $300 and the movies come down in price as well. NextGen consoles on the other hand are vital to world security and stability. MS controls too much as it is, Sony is a big headed sob and forces too much on an end user, whereas Nintendo just focuses on one thing. games. As for the actual topic question. This should remain a game centric site. The video format war has almost nothing to do with games.

I have heard The Lord of the Rings is coming on HD with even further expanded editions. My money is with HD if either will win out because of this. My gut still says they will never amount to anything but this generation's laser disc.
