Too late, especially now that WoW has grabbed such a huge pie of the market. And like someone said it is newbie unfriendly, and finding groups is a bitch. Plus with the game being dominated by Japanese players, it may be daunting and twice as hard for an English speaking player.

Finally jeez, they're been telling SE to make a XI port since the dawn of time.

Wow, a little too late as mentioned above. It will probably give the game a graphical face-lift on the PS3 like the Xbox 360 received. But still, it's a little too late. And yes, the game is successful. I highly recommend this game. I've been playing it for almost 6 years (in December) and love it to death. And YES, you will have to pay to play it. It's cheaper than WoW and better at customizing your character. On WoW, you have to make a new character if you want to be a different class, but with FFXI, you can use the same character and freely switch jobs, plus you keep all learnt magic and some weapons and armor can work with different jobs, which I've been doing a long time until I get my Artifact Armor for my jobs.

You know what would be funny? If it's Japan only :D

They should have done this back when people cared....

WoW and Guild Wars, and perhaps Age of Reckoning, and Old Republic Online, are all MMO fans need.

At this point, FFXI is probably almost pure profit for SE. Servers have been around long enough, I imagine they're pretty stable, and don't need a ton of maintainance. I doubt development costs are too high, either.

After getting bored with WoW (read: got tired of being the raid leader/main tank for 24 retards) a few months back, I picked up the 360 version a week or two ago. My char is only level 9, but the game seems nifty. I'll never get into it like WoW, but it might be a good diversion every once in a while.

But... isn't my PS2 version I played once playable on a backwards compatible PS3? Why buy it again, especially since it will be the same game by necessity...

it is very newbie friendly ..over the last couple of years all they did was add content for new users.... its  different game now.
