1) Wii mostly got Nintendo hardcore userbase + casual non gamer base
2) Developers making HD games for PS3, x360 and PC, instead of only for Wii(and sometimes ps2), because of controls.
3) Not all gamers want in 2009 have same graphics, that hey had since 2000.

Gran Turismo 3 - 1,06 mln. in 3 weeks with around 4 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Gran Turismo 4 - 1,16 mln. with 18 mln. PS2 on the launch.

Final Fantasy X - around 2 mln. with 5 mln. PS2 on the launch.
Final Fantasy X-2 - 2.4 mln. with 12 mln. PS2 on the launch.

 

1.8 mln. PS3 today(2008.01.17) in Japan. Now(2009.04.30) 3.16 mln. PS3 were sold in Japan.
PS3 will reach 4 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 25k.

PS3 may reach 5 mln. in Japan by the end of 2009 with average weekly sales 50k.
PS2 2001 vs PS3 2008 sales numbers =) + New games released in Japan by 2009 that passed 100k so far

Yeah that's great for last gen, but so far this gen Sony is a beast with its first party games. Top PS3 games published by Sony

1. Resistance - 3.59
2. Motorstorm - 3.48
3. GT5P - 3.02
4. Uncharted - 2.34
5. LBP - 2.19
6. Killzone 2 - 1.59
7. Resistance 2 - 1.54
8. Ratchet & Clank - 1.47
9. Heavenly Sword - 1.36
10. Singstar - 0.84

So far this gen, after only 2.5 years and only a 21 million userbase to work; with 9 of Sony's top 10 selling games are million sellers. Imagine what it will be after 9 years like the PS2 is almost at.

So while your arguement is great for a solution if it was last gen, it doesn't really count this gen... except for with the 360 which has 12 million sellers after 3.5 years and a 30 million userbase. Not much better than Sony.
