When has games RELEASES ever mattered in the sales of the Wii in NA?

Um shipments increase when big games release.   Nintendo increased shipment for Wii in NA by a hell of alot when Mario Kart Wii released. Sold out in stores doesn't mean that Ninty doesn't have the ability to ship more at key times.

I think his point is that even without having any killer apps in the past...year?...the Wii still sold gangbusters in North America. He argues that this month implies that the gravy train is over.

For what it's worth, I agree.

Well I doubt he formulated that but I do see what YOU are saying.  I do think we all understand that Wii was a relatively hot object for the longest time and eventually it was going to come down from that.  I just don't think most people knew what that was going to be like.  Not to mention, with relatively low reason to buy one this early in the year, I must say 340k is quite good in one month right now.

I mean we are also coming in to some of the slowest months of the year so we need to realize that as well.  People on forums love to overreact but I bet if they would just look up a little more stats and info before they speak they wouldn't be surprised.  Wii came down from it's "gravy train" as yall crudely put it.  Of course because it is no longer that sold out product.  It had to come down eventually... nothing sells like that forever.  People just need to realize when it comes down it was going to have these huge drops.  Look at where it is after the drops by going over regular trends, games released, etc.  Do that I'm sure people will be quite satisfied with 340,000 units of Wii sold in April along with great sales of Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii.

I've been advocating the same thing for 2 months but the majority of people still prefer to believe Wii is going ship like 26 million units or more this fiscal year.

I think a few more months like April and people will fall fack to earth..

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

TheSource is always right. PS3 and 360 would kill to have the numbers that the wii had, in a month that did not have any big releases for the wii.

That's a huge drop, is there a Wii shortage in US?

Last year the Wii got MK Wii and Wii Fit and Brawl was released just March.

When has games RELEASES ever mattered in the sales of the Wii in NA?

Obviously the typically high Wii sales is due to game's legs. New releases will boost consoles, this is nothing new. Wii didn't stay flat when new games released. Don't understand why you posted this.

Although now different, whatever shipment Nintendo had were sold anyway due to high demands, not games.

The reason for such high demand is because the Wii has games that people want to play - it's not like people can watch Blu-Ray movies with a Wii... the only thing you really can do is play games. The point you're try'na make will always come back full circle to games.

I think this might also put a ki-bosh on the "Nintendo doesn't need core games".

Clearly Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Kart Wii (which I still consider a core game, Wii Wheel or not) helped the Wii out a lot last year.

I think Punch-Out! will be a hit though.

There's nothing "crude" about the gravy train!

I like gravy and trains...=^(

You're quite right as well: it's not a particularly amazing thing that the Wii's sales isn't that they're starting to cool down months after their last killer app was released. If anything, it's amazing that it coasted this long without its own, new heavy hitters.

Of course, you and I both know that none of this will deter investors (and the "journalists") from decrying otherwise. Honestly, I kind of hope Nintendo's stock drops just a little bit more, so I can make a killing when I re-invest in them.

Pretty true. They can't live off casual games forever.

Or more to the point -- they need a balance. I think Nintendo now realizes they put all their eggs into Wii Music and they are now feeling a little bit of a pinch because of that.

I think they also probably realize they need to increase their dev resources. If they had a Donkey Kong or Star Fox or Zelda game for this spring/summer ... a missed oppurtunity.

I also wonder though if the DSi launch perhaps ate into some Wii sales as well. People interested in a Nintendo machine may have opted for newer DSi with all the marketing it has gotten too.

Wii Fit, Mario Kart Wii, Animal Crossing, and Wii Music say "Hi" (waving at you in retrospect from November and December 2008).

Surely those games had nothing to do with Wii sales during the holiday... (hint: Just make sure you don't look at the NPD top 10 for those two months!!!)
