Forums - Sales - The Official April NPD Thread (Data at 6:30 PM EST)

Pretty uniform drops in weekly sales rates for PS3, 360, and Wii (30-35% - with 360 seeing the highest drop). Remember March was 5 weeks, April 4 weeks.

Wii still topping PS3 + 360 combined. PS2 within 3k of Xbox 360 on a $29 price drop is impressive, although I guess it re-established a $100+ price point distance between the two systems.

I don't think its unreasonable to expect PS3 to dip below 100k again in May as it did in 2007. X360 could be down to <150k numbers too.  Brett was showing me some preorder data for Punch Out, I don't see Wii dropping off any further in May, and EA Active which comes out the same week could end up having better legs anyway.

That's a huge drop, is there a Wii shortage in US?

Last year the Wii got MK Wii and Wii Fit and Brawl was released just March.

When has games RELEASES ever mattered in the sales of the Wii in NA?

Obviously the typically high Wii sales is due to game's legs. New releases will boost consoles, this is nothing new. Wii didn't stay flat when new games released. Don't understand why you posted this.

Although now different, whatever shipment Nintendo had were sold anyway due to high demands, not games.

so the Wii with no relevant releases still outsell the X360 and the PS3

true but the YoY May 09 vs May 08 is going to be terrible for the Wii.

PS3-Xbox360 gap : 1.5 millions and going up in PS3 favor !

PS3-Wii gap : 20 millions and going down !

I think this is good though, I'm starting to believe that Nintendo is basically forced to release a new Mario or Zelda or Donkey Kong game in the fall this year.

Pikmin alone won't hit the sales targets they want to hit.

Exactly...they need a big game and they'll bring out big Wii shipments and it'll be back up again. Punch Out is supposed to have a big ad budget so we'll see how high Wii sales go up enxt month.

Big games, yes, I'm not sure I understand the big shipment part.

Wii is in supply everywhere.

Increasing shipment isn't going to increased sales like Nintendo was doing last year...

Um shipments increase when big games release.   Nintendo increased shipment for Wii in NA by a hell of alot when Mario Kart Wii released. Sold out in stores doesn't mean that Ninty doesn't have the ability to ship more at key times.

I think his point is that even without having any killer apps in the past...year?...the Wii still sold gangbusters in North America. He argues that this month implies that the gravy train is over.

For what it's worth, I agree.

Well I doubt he formulated that but I do see what YOU are saying.  I do think we all understand that Wii was a relatively hot object for the longest time and eventually it was going to come down from that.  I just don't think most people knew what that was going to be like.  Not to mention, with relatively low reason to buy one this early in the year, I must say 340k is quite good in one month right now.

I mean we are also coming in to some of the slowest months of the year so we need to realize that as well.  People on forums love to overreact but I bet if they would just look up a little more stats and info before they speak they wouldn't be surprised.  Wii came down from it's "gravy train" as yall crudely put it.  Of course because it is no longer that sold out product.  It had to come down eventually... nothing sells like that forever.  People just need to realize when it comes down it was going to have these huge drops.  Look at where it is after the drops by going over regular trends, games released, etc.  Do that I'm sure people will be quite satisfied with 340,000 units of Wii sold in April along with great sales of Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii.
