Forums - Gaming - Did most gamers not like Grand Theft Auto 4?

I've been reading the recent revelations on vgchartz top 100 countdown with interest, and I noticed that lots of people seem to have said something along the lines of "at least game x wasn't beaten by GTA 4!".

It's fair to say that GTA 4 got stellar critical reviews when it came out, and I thought it was a fantastic game. But it was the first GTA I've ever played, so I was wondering if I was missing something here. Did most gamers actually think GTA 4 was massively overrated?

Thanks for quoting me :) And btw that KOTOR :)

They killed the fun factor

Agreed, but even without it the game was quite a remarkable achievement. It doesnt deserve the hate it's getting from some.

But I'm comparing it to Vice City and San Andreas. Off course it's GTA and it's good.

Lots of people seem to hate the game and say it was a downgrade from San Andreas, but personally, I think it was far, far superior to San Andreas.

How?

By removing all that terrible micromanagement San Andreas shoved in our faces.

By Micro management do you mean the Gyms... eating... haircuts... etc. ?

Eating and haircuts are fine I guess, but mostly the fact that you had to keep doing something to stay good at it, and you had to train to improve your bike skill, driving skill, physical fitness etc.

Also, I think GTA4 did a better job at making the world actually relevant. San Andreas had so much dead space that was just there to make the overworld bigger, but didn't really matter. In GTA4, you can actually do something at most locations if you want to.

@Majin.

So you disliked it because it was more realistic?

In GTA4 there is minimal options to do, you cant even pilot a plane...
Sure, the cities are better, but San Andreas actually feels like its a proper landscape, not just some city.

It wasn't realistic, it was annoying and pointless.

I didn't like it because there were less vehicles, weapons, music and things to do than San Andreas. There was also no airplanes. It was a step backwards, it was even that great technically or from a design pov. And by removing things like Mountains, jetpacks and parachutes they removed the fun. GTA IV sucks ass.

Training to be good at something aint realistic... awesome!

The answer is, most gamers loved GTA4. Truth.

There is a small pocket of backlash and internet hate, because the game got such high ratings. Many forum goers, those passionate about the subject, look for any reason they can to bash the game, and troll for GTAIV bashing posts.

You can pretty much assume that everyone who doesn't post hate here, loved it.

It was the best game of the series. Shooting was actually not broken for once, less side mission bullcrap, meaning it's more streamlined, and has a purpose. Better story, better characters, better script, better gameplay, more realistic gameplay, better graphics.

That said, I hated GTA before IV came out. I think they removed all the stuff that sucked from the series, and made it a better, more linear game, that everyone could enjoy, not just those looking for a huge boring sandbox.

That's my opinion, reviewers and most gamers agree.

NO NO, NO NO NO.

I think most people would agree that it was worth 9.0-9.7 but IGN's 10/10 made it seem much better than it was. It was still a great game that was criticised because it was less humorous then its predecessors.
