(Disclaimer, I've never actually played Wii music, so my rant below is being generic) My point is that it isn't a disappointment that a game like this has sold well. Any true "hardcore" gamer would be happy that the market is expanding into new areas because a hardcore gamer plays and appreciates all types of games, not just those with an M rating on the packaging or a bunch of other people said was good so they don't have to think about what to buy next. All the reviews show us is that the game journalism industry has its head up its arse and won't be drawing in new readers while they keep pandering to the crowd that needs to come on forums like these and reaffirm their manhood by pointing out how disappointing it is that games which don't involve killing everything that moves are selling. For a group of people who truly apprecitate gaming, they should be happy that others can enjoy their passion. A lot of "hardcore" games are extremely complex for people who don't game seriously and are never going to have the skills to control a console FPS. Sure I expect a bit of fanboyism going on and people not to like everything that comes out, but there have been so many threads that go far beyond this into the land of arrogance and ignorance. |
That's right, reviewers only like games that involve killing everything that moves.

And several more.
All have 90+ on Metacritic, none involve violence or killing in any significant way.
*DISCLAIMER: I have also never played Wii Music, so again, just a generic rant*
What people seemingly can't accept is the possibility that this isn't actually a good game, or that the reviewers didn't like it. It's their opinion. What do you mean, they're "playing it wrong"? How do you play a game wrong? If you don't like it, you have the right to express your opinion. You can publish your opinion. Your opinion, and 1UP's opinion, are no more correct than IGN or GameSpot's opinion! It's just that reviewers are (supposedly) trained to remain as objective as possible, and evaluate a game based on its own merits. Nobody will ever, though, be completely unbiased.
So every review is an opinion. Whether it's written by IGN, GameSpot, EuroGamer, 1UP, you, me, Machina-AX, Torillian, or Carmina2008, it's an opinion. The mark of a good review is not sharing everybody's opinion, it is mentioning all of the facts, and assessing it fairly, giving it a score that reflects the quality of the game and the statements of the review. That's why the same game can have two excellent reviews, one giving it a 9.5, one giving it a 7.
I'm not saying that it is bad (I have no way of knowing that), I'm just saying that it isn't necessarily that great. I mean, really. Assuming that 75+ is a "positive review", do you know how many reviewers gave it a positive review, on Metacritic? 12 out of 43. Less than a third. If a "negative review" is below 50, 8 reviewers gave it a negative review. Which is less than the number of positive reviews, but it seems that the large majority of reviewers (23 of them) thought it was just average. I doubt IGN's reviewer played for six hours, thought "Meh, 5/10", then played for another week and thought "ZOMG THIS IS PWNAGE! BEST GAME EVAR! 9.7/10!". People don't tend to change their opinions like that.
And one final statement: Wii owners, the world is not against you. A Wii game receiving negative reviews is not an anti-innovation conspiracy, or even Wii hating. It's just a subpar Wii game.
/rant.
A lot of people saw this game on demonstration at last year's E3 2008. Most of us saw it in action and were like what the hell is this game? There seem absolutely no point to the game. Just pressing buttons to make noises. Ok it may interest some young children but is this a game with any substance? Wii Music appeared to have no challenge to it at all. So it is totally understandable the reviewers gave it mediocre reviews. The Wii Music game that I saw on display during Nintendos presentation looked like it would not hold my attention for more than 5 minutes.

this. from reviews i can see that all of reviewers fought that they would get another mindless rhythm game that don't expect from gamer anything except fast fingers and they get game that is all about creativity and your own way of expression. the only thing that it does wrong is using midi instead of mp3s. people were complaining about implemented track list, but it's more about you creating those tracks than you replaying them - besides songs with higher difficulty would be unplayable for non musicians.
@Kantor
Wii Music did recieve some really bad reviews. Not bad as in low scores, but bad as in people not trying to understand the game, or people that simply disliked that type of game. You do not put a reviewer that hates soccer more than anything to review a soccer game. But you can put a reviewer that hates casual games and absolutely need highscores to enjoy playing on reviewing Wii Music. And that part is not good.
Everybody is entitled to their opinion. And I do not doubt that the reviewers stated their opinion. But you should give any game the same treatment as you do the others. That's all.

lol? no challenge at all? try to play those songs right and then we talk. and how come there could be a visable challenge(like scores) when you can play any song from wii music on 10000 different ways, slower, faster etc. how is it possible to implement there any kind of scoring? if you're complainig about this you should complain about LBP as well cause user created levels don't have any chellenge as well - it's only about finishing it.

I think that is what reviewers did. They did not give the game extra points for being different. They just did not like it and gave low scores as they would have given any game they did not like.

This. Sometimes I can't believe that some people are actually thinking there is some kind of "conspiracy" against wii.

The problem with the reviewers aren't nessisarily they are hardcore gamers... it's that they have no culture of "higher standards" other then "did I personally like this movie" and videogame culture online has largely been based around the same few very niche groups of people. Even before the Wii came out reviewers didn't speak for the majority it was still a problem. The problem is just more magnified now. |
Someone speaks the truth and it falls on deaf ears...
Really people, stop bashing, it's fun, it teaches things, if it's not your cup of tea... then drink lemonade.

Did you even read what I said? I did not fault individual persons for saying what they thought of the game, I faulted the companies and the system for not giving Wii Music the chance that other games get. Don't just repeat what I say without looking at my main argument.
