If you are, nice thread

Although the PS3 hardly "crushed" the 360 in weekly sales in Q1-3 2008; the gap was similar to the 360-PS3 gap in 2009. Perhaps a little more, only because Sony always has the lead on Microsoft in Japan, so it was higher America + higher Europe + higher Japan, as opposed to higher NA + higher Europe -lower Japan.

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 04th Oct 2008 to 03rd Jan 2009:

Xbox 360 advantage: 81.4%
Console PS3 X360
Total
3,825,018
5,957,628

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 10th Jan 2009 to 04th Apr 2009:

Xbox 360 advantage: 19.1%
Console PS3 X360
Total
2,100,855
2,502,791

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 12th Jan 2008 to 05th Apr 2008:
Xbox 360 disadvantage: 21.8%
Console PS3 X360
Total
2,387,906
1,690,009

VGChartz Hardware data for the period 06th Oct 2007 to 05th Jan 2008:
Xbox 360 disadvantage: 1.1%
Console PS3 X360
Total
4,249,431
4,203,166

Furthermore, the Xbox 360 has had its best performance relative to the PS3 in the last time period it has had ever.

So overall (in these timeframes anyway)

Xbox 360 price cut - 2.5 million

PS3 price cut - 750k ...

This is incredibly interesting, and I think you nailed it.

I have one follow-up question though: Is it like this everywhere?

By a quick check, it seems that it is only like this is only the case in Americas.

That leads to another question: Could Americas be the largest during the holidays, but smaller during Q1-Q3?

In Q1-Q3 2008, there was sold ~ 10% more in Others.

In Q4 2008, there was sold ~ 10% more in Americas.

That's a rather large turnaround.

Now, there is of course a matter of cause and effect here. It could be that it sells more in Americas because the X360 sells more then. Still, I believe that part of the reason the X360 is selling better in the holidays is that Christmas is bigger in America than in the rest of the world. The data sure seems to back that up.

Thats an interesting point, it deserves a lot of thought.

On the Americas vs Others sales ratios, the trends I indicated seem to hold especially true there as well. Remember the months when the NPD came in that showed the PS3 was higher than the Xbox 360? Those came several months after the PS3 price cut, whilst the Xbox 360 held its own immediately after the PS3 price cut in this region and it cannot all be attributed to Halo 3 which debuted in September.

So yes, Others are steadier and they tend to favour the PS3 whilst Americas tend to concentrate towards Q4 more and the recent sales seem to follow this as well, and they favour the Xbox 360, which could perhaps be in part due to the cheaper price the Xbox 360 has always been in that region for every holiday season.

Yep, but the PS3 IIRC aquired a yearly gross of 1.8M on the Xbox 360 even after the first price cut due to sustained high sales during the year before the rather deep price cuts hit for the Xbox 360 at the end of the year.

True but the year is still young, the 360's price cut advantage is still active so it can easily rise to 3 million

The important difference IMO between then and now is that the Xbox 360 has had an extremely deep price cut relative to the PS3 in Others especially, whilst then the PS3 and Xbox 360 sales/Average sale price were relatively close.

Well said Squill, and it's always nice to see a clear head make use of prior numbers and sales trends here on the Chartz.

This sort of reminds me of Sqrl's Holiday H.Y.P.E. thread last Holiday season, which definitely points in your direction.

Going about these "brand concious" consumers, do you think their influence is dwindling now (pointing towards YoY decrease for PS3 and YoY increase for 360), or is it a tougher economy making price point king? Or maybe a little bit of both (I may have answered my own question ). I'm just curious to see what ol' Squill has to say about these current sales trends.

@ squilliam
price cut slashed on the ps3 in 2007 was $100 not $200......

higher model - 599
lower model - 499

current price...which was from the 2007 price cut

higher model - 499
lower model- 399

i wish sony had a $200 price cut...so does everyone else who wants one

I think the previous data we have on which SKUs sell the most in which regions are important.

In Europe we've seen that the Xbox 360 Arcade is the most popular SKU, meaning that the Xbox 360 is more popular there amongst the more price concious sectors of the market. However due to how a distance has not grown between the Xbox 360 and PS3 in this region I would say the Xbox 360 is failing to capture a lot of the core market which prefers the PS3 over the Xbox 360 seemingly in spite of the massive price delta. As the Xbox 360 gains traction, perhaps we will see the Xbox 360 gaining in the core markets, but in general the PS3 is the desired console for core gamers and sales of games inspite of the higher Xbox 360 sales reflect the differences here in the userbase.

In America the average price of the SKUs as stated by Pachter is $290 for the Xbox 360. This indicates that most people are still choosing the Pro/Elite SKUs balanced out with a slightly higher purchase rate of the Arcade vs the Elite. In America the real price difference is roughly $100 between the Xbox 360 and PS3. I would say that the assumption that the American market is more price concious than the European market is false, the difference is due to that the Xbox 360 is prefered to the PS3 for core gamers as the actual price delta when factoring in an Xbox Live Gold subscription cost of $50 is only an average of $50 for the typical Pro SKU purchase without wireless or a Blu Ray player! The major difference here is that the PS3 doesn't have a value offering, so the price concious part of the market only has one way to go.

I don't think the differences are entirely due to brand conciousness. The PS3 for example is being crushed all the same by the Wii in Europe and Nintendo has never had as strong a presence there as in other markets. I would say a lot of the differences are due to how the consoles themselves cater to the core userbase who purchase systems throughout the year, rather than the more price concious/casual userbase that is a greater factor in the holiday quarter. However brand is an important factor when both are considered as good, say the American 360 vs PS3 scenario during the year and in the Europe where there are many people who would not buy an Xbox 360 at any price.

Does that make sense? Sorry for the late reply, I been distracted.

ps3 won't outsell 360 in the quiet quarters this year.

Europe didn't get the cheaper SKU, so they definately had a $200 price cut and the 20GB SKU in the U.S was in limited supply, we know this because the 60GB SKUs sales were higher than the 20GB SKU by a ratio of 4:1 and if people were struggling to pay or justify the ticket price, especially knowing they could upgrade the HDD later they would have chosen the cheaper SKU if they could.
