Forums - Gaming - Gaming Consoles Brand Value

Today the new BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands from Millward Brown Optimor was released... Google at 1 Microsoft at 2 etc... This is important for companies and design agencies (were I work) because the value of a brand means a lot of things.. recognition, emotional connection, a respect for technical innovation, design... These responses to brand draw customers, drive investment, and help assure long-term corporate stability.. Millward Brown Optimor measures both the short and long-term effects of marketing activities and link them to the financial impact on the business... So brand value is important.. This year Millward Brown Optimor has included a list of the Gaming Consoles brand value:

Just a warning: If you are a Playstation fan.. don't look...

It seems that playstation is a dying brand.. it's not as populair anymore as it used to be.. they really need a new markting strategy to rebuild their fame..  Nintendo is doing great.. and it seems that Microsoft is also doing good.. They have made a name with the 360... Bit surprised that Playstation 2 is really low.. it was even beaten by the Game boy brand.. both of them lacked any marketing the last few years but I guess Game Boy is more loved and reconised by non gamers...

what does brand contribution and momentum mean?

N64 is the ONLY console of the fifth generation!

bet with *no one yet* that the combined first week of Monster Hunter 3 in america and europe will be 600k or more! winner changes looser sig and avatar for two months!

Regardless of that, I still consider The Playstation brand to be the strongest, although its in freefall at the minute. Ask yourself this:

Would a Nintendo or Xbox sell 21M units being priced the same as a PS3? I myself dont think so.

From Millward Brown Optimo:

---------------------------------------

Brand Contribution
How much of these branded earnings are generated due to the brand’s close bond with its customers?
The portion of these earnings driven by brand equity is called “Brand Contribution”:
The degree to which brand plays a role in generating earnings. This is established
through analysis of country-, market-, and brand-specific consumer research from
the BrandZ database

This guarantees that the Brand Contribution is rooted in real-life customer perceptions
and behavior, not spurious ‘expert opinion’: in some categories, brand is important —
luxury, cars, or beer, for instance. In categories like motor fuel, on the other hand, price and
location play a very strong role. Furthermore, as markets develop, consumer priorities and
the role of brand may change. And even in strongly branded categories, some successful
brands that compete heavily on price.

The Brand Momentum™ indicator that indicates each brand’s growth is based on this evaluation. It is presented as an indexed figure that ranges from 1 to 10 (10 being high).

-----------------------------------------

So basicly how much does the brandname has an influence on the value and the growth of a brand...

Why is Xbox above PS2?

Is the strength of the old brand changed by the strength of the new when they have the same name? (ie PS3 not doing as well as X360 means PS2 is lower than XB)

The fact that Xbox is above PS2 makes me think this is a fake.

The Wii would have, 21M is not alot. Hell for the first and second holiday seasons they were showing up on ebay for close the the PS3's asking price. The ipod sells at post-apple tax pricing, the Wii enjoys the same type of consumer appeal.

Ask yourself this though, for the PS3's asking price, would Nintendo have the content to support thier higher prices? If Nintendo had started selling the Wii at $599 like the original 60GB PS3 I highly doubt it would be the same Wii that was released.

Being partnered with IBM, ATI, and Panasonic several times they have access to all the technology they would need to match the PS3's hardware. But that would be silly, why do that when you can release a $249 system that sells at a profit from day one?

That sounds reasonable to me.  The PS3 has hurt all things called Playstation, and the 360 has helped all things called Xbox.
